Stop At: Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA
After pickup from one of 16 pickup locations in New Orleans, it's a short drive across Lake Pontchartrain to Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.
Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife. It’s the ideal way to take in the lush environment of Cajun country.
As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for resident wildlife including alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and many other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Their ancestors once roamed the earth with the dinosaurs and scientists estimate that they have existed for more than 150 million years.
Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine from your guide. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures.
After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour on Honey Island Swamp, your guide returns you to shore. You can either take the coach back to your New Orleans hotel or make your own way to your next destination, depending on the option you have chosen when booking.

The bus ride to the swamp was excellent. The driver was very knowledgeable about New Orleans and the surrounding areas. When we got to the swamp, our tour guide for the swamp made everything really fun. He was very informative and funny at the same time. We got to see alligators, pigs, and raccoons! The boat ride was also very exciting. I would do this tour again when I come back to NOLA.
Capt. Greg was great. He made sure we got to see everything close up. It was a nice beautiful day. The bus was waiting, so no time to enjoy the gift shop.
It was a great experience. Our Captain was Chris. He was so much fun, wanted to make sure we got our pictures, told great stories, wonderful sense of humor. Glad we got him as our guide. The only issue I would mention was lack of communication about bus system. And then getting quite the attitude from a bus driver when we didn’t know which bus to be on. Otherwise fantastic.
This was a fun way to spend half a day. The swamp is actually very beautiful, our guide was funny and the gators were very cool.
Had a great time and learned so much from Captain Everett. We took the 8 am tour from New Orleans. Glad we did since it was quite warm. Organized very well. Bus trip was fun and informative as well with our driver Diana.
Caption John did a great job showing us around the bayous. We were in a group of 12. The pick-up at the hotel, the ride to the site, the boat trip and the return ride were great. Highly recommended.
Great time with Capt Sonny. Really made the trip fun. Very knowledgeable about the swamp, animals etc.
Great trip. Pick up was on time smooth ride to the tour boats. Swamp trip fun saw plenty of wildlife alligators, wild boars , raccoons and snakes. Boat guide was informative and fun. Would do it again.
From start to finish, I had a great time! Kim, the bus driver, was a wonderful historian of the New Orleans area. She was entertaining and informative; I learned more from the bus ride than I might have from a formal tour - the neighborhoods, the effects of Katrina, the architecture, and more. On the return bus ride, she educated us to the best places to get good New Orleans cooking - which proved helpful later that evening. While on the bayou, Captain Emmett similarly was a spectacular guide. We were able to see all sorts of wildlife close up (gators, wild boar, birds) as well as learn about the swamp, its history and the foliage specific to it - usages, properties, identifying features. I was able to take some great pictures! I would definitely encourage anyone going to New Orleans to take advantage of this swamp tour!
Captain Jeda was informative but also made it all great fun! Saw alligators and wild boar . Amazing !
Our swamp tour was fantastic! Lots of gators, a boar, a few snakes, and 2 raccoons. Our tour guide, captain Everett was incredibly knowledgeable, and informative. The weather was perfect, the ride was great, and just overall a fantastic tour and experience! Everett had a charming personality, with a vast amount of information. We would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wanted to do this tour. The only thing my husband was a little disappointed, was that he couldn't feed marshmallows to an alligator, but other then that, was fantastic!
Seeing gators, birds, wild flowers, snakes, and wild pigs up close and personal is a must do even if you don't have a bucket list.
This tour was great. We were picked up for the tour at our hotel, then transferred to a bigger bus. The trip to the swamp was about 45 minutes and the driver told us about interesting facts about the areas we rode through. We crossed Lake Pontchartrain, which is huge. Upon arrival at the swamp you check in, are given an armband and a chance to buy snacks and use the restroom before the tour begins. The boat held about 20 people and we sped down the river before going into the swamp. The wind made it quite chilly as the air temp was only in the low 60s, but once we’re slowed down it wasn’t as cold. We saw wild boar, alligators, herons, egrets, turtles and raccoons. The tour guides know exactly where to go to see wildlife. The swamp itself is very beautiful and there are many photo opportunities. The tour itself was about 2 hours. Highly recommended!
Captain Jason was excellent. I taken numerous tours and I have to say this was one of the best experiences we've had
From start to finish it was a good day.Scott the Bus Driver had great knowledge of New Orleans as he drove us to the swamp.Cpt John tried hard to try and find us some Alligators.but no good..He took us to see the Boars and raccoons.highly recommend.
We were very impressed with how organized everything was. Our captain was excellent we had a great time. I highly recommend this tour company
This tour was full of interesting information. Our guide, Emmitt, was very knowledgeable and fun. We were there on an unusually cold day so we only saw one alligator but we saw lots of other animals.
Jerry our guide was wonderful and the adventure was awesome. Would recommend it highly to everyone. The highlight of our trip to New Orleans. Thanks.
