Old South Carriage
Daily - MUST check-in 15-minutes
On a carriage drawn by magnificent Belgian and Percheron draft horses, travel with Old South Carriage through historic districts of Charleston to learn about the history of the “Holy City.”
Meet your carriage on Anson Street near the City Market for your 1-hour tour with your knowledgeable guide. Listen to fascinating historical facts and entertaining local stories as your carriage glides through 300 years of history.
Your journey takes you back to the colonial beginnings of Charleston as you pass old churches and antebellum mansions surrounded by lush gardens. Stop outside historic homes such as the Aiken-Rhett House, which was built in 1818 and became the residence of the 61st governor of South Carolina. Be sure to have your camera ready for to snap photos of Charleston’s many picturesque homes and gardens.
While the beautiful homes offer captivating stories, the horse that pulls your carriage provides another highlight of your tour. The horse is much like the draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s. These handsome animals are carefully looked after by their handlers, have regular weeks off and get several months per year to run free on a 65-acre (26-hectare) plantation located just 8 miles (13 km) from their Charleston stables.
Expect to cover more than 2.5 miles (4 km) and 30 blocks of historical homes. At the end of your 1-hour tour, your guide returns you to your starting point where you can make your way to your next destination.

Our driver/guide Carol was very entertaining and the ride through the back streets of Charleston was lovely and relaxing. It could have been even longer than 45 minutes.
Carriage Tour guide, Janice, was very fun and a wealth of information on the area. Stories of buildings and the people of past times added to our visit. Vern who pulled the carriage thru the town was fun the watch and gave us a smooth ride.
Loved to carriage tour with this tour company! The tour guild was funny and the horses are beautiful! For sure a must if you are in Charleston!
Great tour informative guide very knowledgeable. Could have been longer. Great horse Bill. He gave us a lot of little know facts.
I would definitely recommend this tour. Charleston is beautiful. We stayed in Myrtle Beach for the week and drove to Charleston for the day. Next trip will be to Charleston directly!
Our guide Josh and our horse Austin took us on a fun and relaxing tour through historic Charleston. Josh taught us all so much! Both of our kids, ages 11 and 14, loved it. I highly recommend to everyone.
Great fun, wonderful driver and guide, charming.
Much better deal to buy on Viator than to book through the cruise ship's excursion desk!
First, Old South Carriage Historical Tours take excellent care of their horses and that is evident as you leave from their barn. They are also the only tours that have guides in uniform and a ramp to get you into the carriage! The professionalism was amazing compared to other carriages seen on the road. Lori was our tour guide, very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor, particularly with Buddy, our horse, who didn't always want to stop and wait when requested. Lori's knowledge of the history of Charleston, including the architecture of the different homes was truly amazing. We were there for a wedding and already recommended the tour to others who were staying longer during the week. Highly recommend and would love to go on other tours the company offers. Thanks Lori and Buddy!!
Fun way to experience a part of Charleston. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.
Simply one of the best tours in Charleston! I had Carol guide and Jacob as my trusty steed - Carol was bright and warm and welcoming and knew everything about the town. Her stories were intriguing and fascinating and I quickly wrote them all down afterwards as they truly were ones you can tell your friends/family about! Carol included great food recommendations and overall I was incredibly impressed with the organisation and implementation of this tour!
Their guides are very knowledgeable. Their horses are well cared for and the operation of this carriage service is very impressive. I highly recommend this service since it operates on such a large and efficient scale.
Our guide was informative and amusing
Our great horse was Rowdy from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
What a huge teddy bear..
Take this tour with this excellent company
My husband, adult son and I took the tour and we won the jackpot, because our route that day took us along King Street to the Battery and up along the coast and Rainbow Row. I've taken this before and that route was more residential nice but not as impressive. Both times, the guides were articulate, careful with the horses in traffic and full of wonderful stories. We all loved it. Great way to get acquainted with Charleston.
Great tour, our guide Josh was very entertaining and informative. This tour lets you experience what a unique, beautiful city Charleston truly is. I highly recommend this tour and Old South Carriage.
absolutely wonderful - knowledgeable guide - well maintained equipment - what a very wonderful way to see Charlestown
Peter and Christa - Shore excursion while on an RCL cruise to the Bahamas
It was great and informative. Our tour guide was fun and LOOOOOVED our handsome horse Rascal.
A sunny warm February day in Charleston was the perfect backdrop for what was a fact filled hour about architecture and the city's rich history. Our tour guide was very articulate and knowledgable...Amos the Belgian draught horse performed his duties well!! Will recommend!
