Travel through time by taking a historic 45-minute guided tour of the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Home Museum. Enjoy the chance to learn more about one of the greatest and most influential American writers of the 20th century, right outside of downtown Chicago in Oak Park, Illinois.
Oak Park is a great place to experience the story of Hemingway’s life, as it inspired so much of his work. Much of his writing was shaped by his Illinois roots. The famous author lived in this historic town for 20 years of his life, having spent the first six in the birthplace home.
During your visit, you’ll learn that his maternal grandfather built the Queen Anne Victorian home at 339 N. Oak Park Ave in the late 1800s. You’ll be able to walk through the parlor where his mother taught music lessons and see the bedroom in which Hemingway was born for yourself. You’ll even get the chance to explore the family library, where he acted out poems and stories he had read.
Your knowledgeable docent will provide expert insight and share unique facts about the early years of Hemingway’s extraordinary life as you journey through the home. You’ll also learn about the extensive renovations that were made to the home starting in 1992, which restored it to its original Victorian heritage.
