What to Expect What to Expect

Board the 6-passenger Java Cat at the Key West Historic Seaport and set sail with your small group for the Key West Wildlife Refuge. Take a seat in the shade or stretch out on the expansive trampoline. During the 1-hour journey, your captain shares information about Key West’s mangroves and birdlife.

After dropping anchor, your captain assists you into a high-quality sea kayak with a comfortable backrest and provides instruction. It’s easy paddling in the tranquil waters of The Lakes region, passing through mangrove islands and seagrass beds.

You’ll discover abundant marine life amid the tropical fauna and have a chance to touch sea cucumbers, jellyfish, hermit crabs, sea stars, sea slugs and tulip snails in their banded shells. Other species to observe (not touch) are dolphins, sea turtles, rays, non-aggressive sharks, spiny lobsters, sponges, and crabs.

After kayaking, you’ll sail to another area known for its coral and sponge gardens easily viewed in the crystal-clear waters. Receive snorkeling instruction and quality gear, including short split fins — ideal for the shallow water — and dry snorkels that keep the salt water out. Then slip into the tropical waters to explore the bounty of sea life.

Back on board, rinse off with a freshwater shower. Then dig into a catered light lunch of fresh fruit, veggie slices, pasta salad, curried chicken salad, and artisan bread with a chilled soft drink or water. With your appetite sated, it's time to sail back to Key West.
