This tour was good but this company is not allowed to the top of the mountain so we did not get to actually see the sun rise. Only one company is allowed to the top. The guide was very good and the bike ride down was pleasant and safe.
If you look at the picture, you think you are going to be at the top of the crater. With this company, you are not. We had done this tour with another company years ago. This time we were bringing our teenaged daughters and wanted them to experience the sunrise on top, it was a major reason for booking it. This tour was disappointing. You do not go to the top. The guide made it seem like next to no one is allowed all the way on top. After the tour we did some investigating, there are companies that go all the way on top, this is not one of them. If this was disclosed in the description, we would not have chosen it. The description also states water and snacks would be provided. Nothing of the sort was provided. We made one stop to take a picture, one stop to take a layer of jacket off. Never stopped at a café, never were offered any food or drink. I spoke with someone the day before the tour, I was told it would end about 8:30-9 am and was encouraged to plan to spend some time in Paia. The tour was over at 7:15. The woman driving the van and trailer had to go get her child from somewhere, so maybe that's why it ended so early? I'm not sure. However, when we then went into the town, nothing is really open that early and 2 of the places that according to their hours were supposed to be open, they were not. John was a very nice man and decent tour guide. Clear on what the safety was, etc. But overall, this was truly disappointing. NOT at all what we were expecting based on the information provided.
We thoroughly enjoyed our sunrise bicycle tour. The view at sunrise was amazing! The trip down the crater was very enjoyable. The scenery and the smells were fantastic. Our tour guides, Kevin and John, were great. They made a great experience even better!
