Arrangements for pick -up at Icy Strait Point were exactly as indicated with a friendly and efficient transfer to the boat at Hoonah.
There was adequate space for all on the boat with prime viewing for everyone. Skipper and mate were very friendly. The local skippers clearly rely on one another to keep up to date with location of whales, so there tends to be a bit of scurrying around to catch sightings. A fair bit of luck is needed to be in the right place at the right time.
On the day, it was Hump Back whales which we sighted and then tended to stick with that sighting rather than seek out other possibilities. At Icy Strait point it is actually possible to get sightings from land or from your cruise ship.
Boat was comfortable, without being luxurious - so functional, manoeuvrable and rapid (32 knots on return trip)
Refreshments indicated as available were really very basic - one hot water flask with powdered coffee, tea, hot chocolate, but I didn't spot any 'light snacks' or indeed any snacks.
As far as duration was concerned, I felt this was a bit limited and certainly not 3 hours whale watching promised. We were picked up at 8:30 at Icy Strait Point, transferred / boarded the boat at 9:00 in Hoonah and were back at Icy Strait Point by 11:15. So our time on board was limited to two and a quarter hours. With the speed of this vessel I thought this could have been judged better to give us more time to look for whales or other wild life.
Still, for a new company to Viator this was OK and with development feel it could improve with a better conditions for cancellation (rather than none at all) , better refreshments and more attention to actual time allowed against the 3 hours indicated.
Remember your binoculars - they are almost essential
