Meet your personal epicurean concierge (aka guide) along the curb of the Embarcadero in front of the Ferry Building's main entrance. It's a San Francisco landmark with its iconic 245-foot (75-m) clock tower. Built in the late 1800s, the ferry terminal was renovated in 2003, transforming the concourse into the foodie haven that it is today. Local food purveyors and artisans peddle their wares inside and outside the building — one-stop shopping for anyone looking to experience a taste of San Francisco.
Learn more about the San Francisco Bay Area's tastemakers as you nibble on Cowgirl Creamery's award-winning cheese, Acme Bread's fresh loaves, and Miette Patisserie's delicate French macarons. Want more? Indulge in a cup of chili from the American Eatery and satisfy your sweet tooth with handmade chocolates from Recchiuti. If you’re visiting during one of the weekly farmers’ markets, don’t be surprised if your guide points out some of the city’s revered chefs shopping for fresh produce to include on their menus.
After you satiate your appetite on the food tour, you'll receive directions to Pier 33 to pick up your Alcatraz tickets for the next portion of your tour. Take a stroll along the Embarcadero to Pier 33 where you'll hop on the ferry for a scenic ride to Alcatraz. Explore the island at your leisure with the award-winning

This was a fantastic tour! Our guide, Travis, was absolutely wonderful; he was knowledgeable and personable. He gave us background about the Ferry Building's history as well as interesting stories about the San Francisco food scene, with emphasis on the vendors whose delectable wares we happily sampled. My husband and I were both astounded at the deliciousness (and quantity!) of the food included in the tour. Definitely come hungry!
After our time at the Ferry Building, we were grateful for the opportunity to walk to Pier 33 to catch the ferry to Alcatraz.
Getting tickets and boarding the ferry to Alcatraz were easy, and it was nice to decide on our own pace for the rest of the excursion.
I recommend this tour to anyone visiting San Francisco, but especially to those who really love food.
Our tour was great. Our guide Rebecca was knowledgeable and full of food. The macaron and apple tarts were amazing! She even let me divert to purchase a few nibbles for our Alcatraz trip. I loved this part and can’t wait to do another on the weekend!
The food tour was interesting and Torri, our guide was excellent. She gave us tidbits of history about the pier area and ferry building. The Alcatraz tour was great.
This tour was a nice package! We started the day sampling some wonderful foods from various vendors at the Ferry building. The food was fabulous, and our tour guide Carol was very informative. We left her feeling very full and ready to begin our tour of Alcatraz. The ferry ride alone is great - especially if it's a nice day. Exploring the Prison and taking the Audio Tour was so interesting. Highly recommend!!!
The food tour was a perfect way to start the day - delicious! Our guide, Tori, was brilliant. And Alcatraz is exactly what you're told it is by all and sundry - a really incredible experience that is not to be missed.
Excellent tour. We didnt know what to expect with the food tour, but really enjoyed it. We also learned about the history of the Ferry Building, which was very interesting. Tori was an excellent guide and has a wonderful love for food. After our food tour, we had an hour to get down to Pier 33 to jump on the Alcatraz Ferry its only a 20 min walk. Everything went very smooth, ferry ride was great. We arrived at Alcatraz around 12:30 and stayed until 6. We did everything, the 45 min guided tour, audio self guided tour, 15 min video and walked around on our own. I found the history to be fascinating and there is so much to see and learn about. When we were done, we jumped on the Ferry and then walked down to pier 39 to eat. Love San Francisco. So much to see and do.
lots of food to sample and nice tour of the building. Super informative.
Joshua was an absolute amazing edible excursions guide, and the food we enjoyed at the Ferry Building was very delicious.
Thanks go to Karen, our culinary guide, for the great tour of the Ferry Building. The history of the building was interesting so happy it survived all the fires and earthquakes not to mention city planning. Its a great space! The information provided on each food vendor was wonderful, and Karen provided great backdrop in food history in the area and how its influence has spread across the country and beyond. The food we tasted was delicious were definitely headed back for meals and the Farmers Market. Alcatraz was as expected. The combo tour worked really well because we could walk off some of the food from earlier! The audio tour of Alcatrazs history was quite interesting and the way its choreographed works really well with a lot of people.
Alcatraz is a must see but if you haven't been to the ferry building your trip is incomplete. Great!!!
Truth be told, we only signed up for this tour for access to sold-out Alcatraz...but how glad we were that we did! The food tour was incredible, our guide knowledgeable and it was a fantastic addition to our trip, a real highlight! Tip: No need to eat breakfast beforehand, you get more than your money's worth of fantastic food!
We had a great time on our tour of the Ferry Terminal Marketplace. Our tour guide, Karen, was terrific. She was very knowledgeable on history of the building and area and interspersed little history lessons amongst the different vendors visited She provided lots of background on the various proprietors and the local food culture. And the food we had was amazing!!! This tour is highly recommended.....oh and I almost forgot....we got to see Alcatraz also. After the food portion of the tour, Karen directed us on how to go down to Pier 33 and get our tickets for the Alcatraz Ferry and tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!
The food tour was excellent - Travis had an amazing knowledge of the suppliers in the area and the local culture. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great culinary adventure. Our guide was Joshua who was very knowledgeable about all the vendors in the Ferry Building, and the history of the building itself. He selected a perfect combination of places for us to try and food to sample. It was a great way to start off the morning, and a nice pre-Alcatraz tour activity.
It was the only way we could get to book an Alcatraz tour so were not particularly looking forward to it but the food tasting turned out to be the best thing we did and we are so glad because Alcatraz its self was very disappointing. The guide was brilliant and we learned so much, from how Starbucks started to how California's enviromental ideals are being integrated into their food supply.
The best tip is do not have too much for breakfast and dont take a big mouthful of the chilli sample it is smoking hot.
We were pleasantly surprised by our Ferry Building Food Tour and of course Alcatraz. It was not our first visit to the island. The food sampling was much fun and we tasted amazing samples of food groups which included some pastries and chocolates at the end. So glad we did it this way as we did not have to eat until dinner.
First we had lots of great food to taste at the Ferry Building Do Not eat before you go on this tour!. Our guide was Joshua and he was very personable and shared many interesting facts about the different eateries. Alcatraz was everything we'd hoped for...a beautiful ferry ride and as much time as we wanted to tour the prison. Wonderful!
We truly enjoyed this tour. The Ferry Building Food tour was excellent. Our tour guide terrific. Very knowledgeable and quite pleasant. Food was very good. Only comment - the walk from Pier 1 to Pier 33 for the boat ride took longer than was stated. She said about 15 - 20 minutes. That would be if you were walking pretty fast. Due to the sun, heat and our age it was a lot longer. People should know it can be 30 - 45 minutes. Alcatraz was the best. So much better than we had anticipated. You can go at your own pace. The audio portion of tour was so educational and entertaining. I would highly recommend this tour.
Guilty as charged. We booked this trip as it was one that had tickets for Alcatraz with it and individual tickets were non exisistent. None the less, I was really looking forward to this foodie tour and Karen did not disappoint!!! She is completely engaging and so knowledgeable about the area and the building itself pointing out details throughout the tour. The food she selected for us to sample was wonderful. I am still dreaming of that little tart thing!!! I highly recommend this tour, you will not be disappointed!
