What to Expect What to Expect

Explore Rio’s largest favela on a half-day walking tour of Rocinha, the largest favela (shantytown) in South America. Organized by local, English speaking guides and favela hosts, the walking tour is respectful and non-intrusive to the residents.
Subject of the movie "City of God," Rio’s favelas have fallen victim to unfortunate stereotypes. In order to correct this, and show you the true Rio de Janeiro, the favela tour will let you see and experience how daily life happens away from the sensationalist headlines.
On this tour, you will get to actually walk the streets in small groups (average of 10 people) and meet the locals to hear their stories. Learn the history of the favela and its social and economic challenges. The tour cost also includes a monetary contribution to the favela community. It is a great opportunity to learn a little more about Rio's culture.

It's a fun day out to favela with Alberto, he knows most of the people there, shared with us lots of history and story, brought us to all odds and ends, showed us where to buy the good local snack such as coxinha and açai ice-cream, best lookout and postcard shots and many more. Highly recommended tour when you are in Rio.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. We never once felt unsafe. It was great to see all aspects of Brazilian life and Brazilian society. Our tour guide - Carlos was fantastic. He is himself a resident of the Favela da Rocinha. It was like walking with an old friend in his neighborhood. I would recommend this tour led by Carlos to anyone who is interested in understanding the holistic social makeup and life in Rio. what a great experience. One for the memories!

The tour was interesting and Carlos was definitely a character but I think you should warn people that some of the pathways are very very steep and narrow - some people found it quite hard going. Carlos was informative but needs to be a little bit aware of his language e.g. swearing.

Great guide, who gave first hand insight of living in favela, felt completely safe. Highlight was riding to the top of the favela on the back of a motorbike, which was suggested by the guide. Stopped for snack and caipirinha during tour. Didn't realise we would be catching public transport to get there tube but it all added to the experience.

Fantastic day! Friendly, knowledgeable guides. Saw some interesting things, and saw a side to the favela I wasn't expecting. This tour group had a very professional feel to it, I felt completely safe, which is a relief as I have heard about other operators being a bit dodgy. These guys knew their stuff. Great afternoon, highly recommend it.

This tour certainly was NOT even close to being 4hrs long as advertised. It barely was over an hour long. Yes, it was the highlight of my trip learning about life in the favelas and I really wanted to learn and see more, but it was in and out. What a shame!!

This tour was the perfect length of time. Just a few hours and there's so much to see around every corner. You really get a wonderful feeling for what it's like to live there. Raphael and Junior were exceptional tour guides. They answered everyone's questions, spoke several languages, took pictures of us, and were simply the perfect hosts. Well worth your time!

Pedro has to be the best tour guide in Rio. We had a very interactive, informative and overall fun tour. Pedro who grew up and still lives in the Rocinha Favela took us everywhere in the Favela which included having lunch at a local stand. You can not visit Rio and not give yourself the opportunity to learn the truth about life in the Favela....the most beautiful, self sustained and extremely united community that I have ever seen

Great tour. Local guide was amazing and on top of that he lives in the favela himself, so he was able to give us a lot of insight.

Very enjoyable afternoon, a bit long winded to start with as minibus had broken down and collecting people from hotels who didn't seem to be ready on time. Our guide had lived in the flavela all his life and seemed to know many people on way round. He was very informative and explained how things were run in a flavela, police leave the residents to sort out issues. The electricity wires have to be seen, a chance to see the other side of Rio, well worth a visit.
