Since 1980 the TAMAR Project has been engaged in the research and conservation of the five species of sea turtles that inhabit the Brazilian coast, all of which are threatened with extinction. During all these years, 25 research bases were established in the country, in locations where TAMAR seeks to involve the community in socio-educational activities in order to stimulate awareness in favor of species preservation.
In 2005, the base of the TAMAR Sul Project was installed in Florianópolis to support activities in the southern region of Brazil that focuses on mitigating the impact of fishing on sea turtles.
In Florianópolis the Visitor Center operates in a 5,000-meter area, totally suitable for use by wheelchair users. It is formed by a permanent exhibition with panels explaining the work developed on the Brazilian coast and specifically in the southern region, replicas of the five species of sea turtles that occur in Brazil, a video room with a capacity for 50 people, "Espaço Infantil", "Espaço of Saber "with skeletons, helmets and turtles chicks preserved in formaldehyde, area for itinerant exhibitions and also" Espaço Cultural ", where free capoeira classes are taught for the community, as well as national shows and other events.
The base still has 5 tanks with 9 live specimens of 4 species of sea turtles in different stages of life, as well as monitors always able to answer all questions of the visitors.
On Saturdays and Sundays, at 13:45, the Interactive Feeding of animals is held where the children can help the caretaker feed the turtles. Only 50 passwords are distributed per day for activity.
