Built in the 17th and 18th centuries and listed as a National Heritage Site by the National Artistic and Historical Heritage Institute, in addition to being considered one of the Seven Portuguese Wonders of the World, the sober facade of the complex hides its lush interior.
It is said that almost a ton of gold was used in its gold plating process. The walls, altars and ceilings decorated with extravagant clusters of flowers, angels, birds and arches are all covered in gold.
A series of panels with 55,000 tiles, painted by Portuguese master Bartolomeu Antunes de Jesus, depict scenes of the life of the Church’s patron saint. In the covenant, visitors can access a cafeteria with tiles dating back to 1650, the library and the gardens, where a graveyard holds the remains of Franciscan friars.
