After morning hotel pickup in Santiago, travel with your guide southeast of the city through El Cajón del Maipo, a canyon and river valley chiseled into the Andes mountains. Your road follows the course of the Maipo River and curves upward. From the comfort of your vehicle, capture a hypnotizing array of panoramas, including rich vineyards and orchards, arid mountainsides and snowcapped peaks.
Make a brief stop at the region’s capital, San José de Maipo, a picturesque adobe-style town founded in 1792, and stock up on any goodies you’d like to munch on during the hike.
Back aboard the vehicle, you'll head to either El Morado Natural Monument or Valle de las Arenas (depending on weather and road conditions) for your 5-hour (round-trip) trek of moderate difficulty. Both hiking routes involve similar terrain; you'll begin in an expansive valley surrounded by towering mountains. Follow your guide up rocky slopes strewn with wildflowers and on mountain paths, perhaps catching sight of condors swooping overhead or yellow-breasted cometocinos fluttering by.
After a 2.5-hour ascent, you’re rewarded with spectacular views of the hanging glacier of El Morado, or its immense lagoon with floes of ice with the snowy summit in the background, soaring 15,246 feet (4,467 meters) into the sky. Admire this landscape while enjoying your box lunch, usually a sandwich, cereal bar, fruit and juice (vegetarian option available). Afterward, follow your guide back to the vehicle.
Treat your sore muscles at Baños Colinas, thermal pools shimmering on mountainside terraces, located at the base of San José volcano. Before dipping in the waters, re-energize with a pisco sour cocktail and cheese snacks. Then start off soaking in the top pool, with the warmest temperature, and work your way down the cliff into the lower pools with cooler waters. As you float in a bubbling hot spring, breathe in the crisp mountain air and take in the amazing views of the Andes.
After about an hour at Baños Colinas, climb back aboard the vehicle and make your way back to Santiago, arriving at your hotel before midnight.

This tour, provided by Ecochile, was a fantastic all-day experience. Our guide Felipe was extremely knowledgeable, very organized and provided a lot of interesting information on our trek to the glacier. Our driver also Felipe did a phenomenal job navigating some pretty tricky roads up in the mountains. While it is quite a long full-day excursion, the activities are thoughtfully planned for example, the wine and cheese spread after the thermal hot springs was a nice way to split up the drive back to Santiago, and done in a spot with a beautiful view of all the colors of the mountains. This is just the tour my wife and I were hoping for in order to get to know the Andes a little better. Highly recommended.
Excellent day. Wonderful driver and Felipe excellent Guide. Full of enthusiasm. Walk was demanding, mainly due to heat and altitude, but OK if taken time over. Mountains glorious, glacier at little smaller than expected. Road to Hot springs an experience. Lovely to soak in the hot springs. A long day, not back till near 10 so the parting cheese and wine /drink welcome . Well worth going.
Our guide, Felipe, was fun, energetic and very informative! The hike itself was beautiful, but a lot more demanding than what I had anticipated. After the hike, we drove to the hot springs about 30 minutes away. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. This tour was well worth the money spent!
We had an amazing experience with EcoChile! Simon was a super guide, very helpful and smiling at all times, so the atmosphere was very relaxed and nice. You should defenetly book this tour if you love nature and a good hike, followed by relaxation! The views from the mountains was spectacular :-)
Had to change our tour to a snowshoe hike through the Fat Valley due to weather issues the week prior. However this was an excellent substitute! The weather and scenery were beautiful. Our guide was a lot of fun and taught us a lot about Chilean culture and hiking in general. I'd definitely recommend this activity to anyone who is able to hike about 2 miles on uneven ground.
Very good indeed. Philippe went out of his way to give us a truly memorable experience. No time pressures at all. We saw everything and did everything - and even got a lovely personal surprise nibbles and wine at the end. Absolutely recommended.
We really enjoyed this tour! The guides were great and the hot springs and picnic were a really great way to end the day!
This day trip was excellent and well worth the money. The hike to the lagoon at the base of the glaciers is moderately challenging and incredibly rewarding. The hot springs are a super plus after a nice hike, and the setting could not be more beautiful. We received breakfast and lunch and a cheese spread with wine at the end - which were perfect. Plus, our guide, Benjamin Bertie could not have been better, nor our driver. Benjamin was knowledgeable, kind, and excited to be on the trip - I can't rave about this day trip more. It was perfect.
Stunning. Worth every penny. Our guide Alejandro was super friendly, knowledgeable and understood we each had our own paces. The beginning of the hike is a bit steep, but then flattens a bit and becomes easier. Wouldn't recommend for those very out of shape. SUCH an amazing experience.
This was such an incredible experience. I was in Chile for school so there were 4 of us that went and ended up meeting 2 Americans on the trip! The small group size was perfect.
Sofia was an amazing tour guide and made sure everyone was okay. We stopped on the way to the Andes to pick up lunch they ask if anyone has any dietary restrictions and you can buy drinks and snacks at the shop. I recommend bringing A LOT of water I had 4 bottles and a bottle of Gatorade and drank it all and snacks. I'm pretty active and this hike was very difficult--at times I didn't think I could do it! I wore layers because some points it was really hot and when you get to the top it's freezing and windy.
Pack your bathing suit and a towel and flip flops and a bag to hold all your dirty clothes in for the hot springs. The bathrooms were kind of dirty as other travelers pointed out but it wasn't that bad. The picnic afterwards was great!
It was a very long day--we didn't get back to our hotel in Santiago until about 11PM. BUT, it was worth it.
Feb 8,2016...What a fantastic day!! Our amazing guide Alejandro led us with 2 other couples up to the glacier lagoon 15 km return trip where we enjoyed a delicious bag lunch which was picked up just outside of Santiago from a delightful local organic vendor. Bring a windbreaker....just over the rise at the top, it got windy and cool, otherwise a clear sunny day with breathtaking views! After our hike, we drove to the hot springs, the end point of a very rugged road close to the Argentine border. After a wonderfully physically exerting hike, the hot springs were lovely and relaxing and Alejandro gave us all the time we needed to relax and enjoy....while he and our driver prepared a wine and cheese picnic which we thoroughly enjoyed before the return trip to Santiago. We were picked up at 8:30 a.m. and dropped off at 9:30 p.m. so this was a long day.....but we returned with that great physically tired but happily so kind of feeling. Alejandro was interesting, engaging and full of information about Chile and the Andes....showing a deep respect and appreciation for the natural beauty of his country...it was such a pleasure to spend the day in his company!
Wonderful tour and wonderful guide and driver! To those who have not done this, there is a of driving involved around 3 hrs each way from Santiago to El Morado and back. But it was worth it for a wonderful trek into the Andes mountains near the border of Argentina, an amazing view of glaciers and ice lake, then over to Hot Springs to relax after a 5 hour hike. Tour even provided wine, cheese, and other snacks after the hot springs. Really magical. Thank you so much for an amazing day!
Well worth it, had an amazing day, Franko was a great guide and made sure everyone made it to the top, best advise he gave when a couple of people were struggling was to take smaller steps and breathe through your nose, would suggest level of fitness should be between moderate to high. Hot springs were great to unwind and relax afterwards, with a great view of the mountains. Thanks for a fantastic experience and a great bunch of people in our group.
Very good. I highly recommend this tour. Alejandro was an excellent tour guide and was very informative. The tour included a very nice hike and followed by the hot springs. The hot spring pools were outdoors and the view was fantastic. I've been to several before in several countries. This one had the least infrastructure development to spoil the view and atmosphere.
This is a must-do! Daniel was professional, interesting, basically fun to climb a glacier with! He accommodated everyone on the tour to make it special. I got to the top of the glacier and the view was spectacular! I'd do it again in a heart beat. John Vozenilek 11/23/2015
This was an awesome day with our guide - Francine. The hiking was challenging, the scenery stunning, and the thermal springs were wonderful. The boxed lunch was great, and the dinner of empanadas and wine on the way home was the perfect end to the day. Kudos to our driver - he was excellent under extremely difficult road conditions. Highly recommend - be prepared for a long day!
Alejandro was basically the best tour guide ever. The trip was incredible! The views were amazing and the hot springs were the perfect way to end the day. Alejandro was super personal and made sure we enjoyed every aspect of the tour. I would definitely recommend this one!
