The archaeological site of Muyil is located in the northern part of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve. This ancient Mayan trading post is the perfect place to enjoy astounding Mayan temples such as the 17 meters (57 ft) building known as El Castillo in the incredibly diverse semi-deciduous forest of Sian Ka'an. From the archaeological site you will take an interpretive trail towards the tallest observation point of Sian Ka'an to admire the exuberant vegetation of the jungle and the fresh water wetlands. Once you reach the Muyil lagoon, you will take a boat across two lagoons connected by an artificial canal that has been in use for many centuries. Xlapak is the name of the building at the beginning of the lazy river and the start of an incredible floating experience in crystal clear pluvial water on its way to the Caribbean ocean. You will float for over 30 minutes surrounded by mangroves, orchids, bromeliads. A delicious vegetarian picnic with seasonal fruits is included in the tour.

Our guide, Marie, was terrific: knowledgeable, fun, and helpful. Wife walks with cane and requires a little extra time, and Marie made this excursion doable for her. We learned so much and saw really amazing sights. Floating in the canal was heavenly! Delicious lunch and snacks were grown and prepared locally. We love that this company is so eco-friendly.
Our family group of 7 was joined by another couple to make 9 people over 3 generations on this tour. Our guide, Andrea, was very knowledgeable and did a great job of giving us a lot of information about the ruins at Muyil in an interesting way that held the attention of the children as well (ages 7 and 10). The walk through the biosphere was interesting and just the right length. The walk to the top of the look-out was worth it and afforded a view of the lagoons. We stopped for a delicious picnic lunch of empanadas, rice and salad before getting in the boats to cross the lagoons. The float down the canal was a blast and enjoyed by all. It was relaxing and quiet - except for the squeals of delight! I had read a previous review that recommended taking water shoes for the walk back. We did that but also noticed that the boat operators delivered everyone's shoes to the exit spot for the walk back. This tour was very well organized and it was nice to give back to the local community. Our guide and driver were very good. We particularly appreciated the small group experience. Be aware that it did last longer than anticipated, but was so interesting that the time went quickly.
This was an amazing mix of culture and environment. Our guide, Luigi, gave a overview of the Mayan architecture at the ruins and their role in the society at the time. But the best part was seeing the biosphere and floating through one of the canals on a hot day.
The tour company offer a more expensive experience that goes to the sian Kaan earlier and we were told that the best time to see more wild life. The ruins are great any time and our guild was very informative. on retrospect i would have paid more and gone to the other side as the floating river is nice but a little boring as no wildlife here all the manatee's are on the sea side, Also quit a walk back after. my advise is to see Muyil earlier in the morning and book for the seaside of Sian Kaan, however over all our guild and driver made the trip fun and interesting.
This trip started out on shaky ground as we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for other participants to arrive. Despite that the guide did keep us appraised of how things were progressing. Our guide, Tannia Garcia was the best! The place itself is amazing and she gave us information historic and environmental which was really interesting. Her attention to detail and attention to each of us was terrific. It was a small group and she made the entire experience fun, inspiring, educational, and delicious. Floating in the canal was fabulous. Both Sian Ka'an and Tannia are remarkably awesome.
I really enjoyed this tour. Hugo was very informative providing us with answers to any of our questions. He is very ecological responsible which is a big plus. Loved floating through the mangroves and the vegetarian snack at the end of the tour.
I highly recommend this really fun and educational ecotour of the Mayan ruins and this beautiful area! Our guide, Pluma was very personable, knowledgeable and kind. He told us Mayan fables that explain the philosophy of the Mayans. There were fun quizzes/games to keep everyone engaged. And, the boat ride and float through the lagoon was beautiful! And, Delicious, organic Mayan food was shared to end the tour.
Extraordinary. This Mayan site has a romantic feel in the jungle and I saw no evidence of commercialization which plagues many sites. The float in a stream of a lagoon was one of the most peaceful and memorable experiences of my life.
Nice Mayan ruins away from the hordes. Very nice guide and driver. Interesting boardwalk through mangrove swamp. Tip: the one place bug spray needed on my February trip. The bay was beautiful, float through the channel very relaxing and fun. Lunch was good, tacos, but at 5:00 ish.
This was a really nice tour. My family enjoyed this very much. The part of the tour floating down the canals was very relaxing and everyone really liked that.
Our tour group was 8 people. Alejandra, our guide was really knowledgeable and a great communicator. The entire tour was quite fantastic. I highly recommend this experience. You will never forget it!
I continue to be in awe with Tulum's bountiful nature. This Sian Ka'An tour is a must for those who love Mayan history and nature. My favorite part of the tour was gliding down the Maya-built canal through the mangroves, literally floating on my back as the water vest kept me safely afloat. Surrender to the canal's natural flow and it's total meditation.
Our guide, Luigi, was informative, friendly, and always checking to see that everyone was doing ok. Thanks for a great Tour!
Overall, it was a really wonderful experience, maybe in spite of our tour guide, Roberto. He did not appear to want to be on the tour and his attitude decreased our enjoyment. It was particularly frustrating as we didn't seem to get a ton of information during our trip both in terms of process - what was going to happen and when - and in terms of what we were seeing along the way, with exception to a slide show which was challenging to watch on a bumpy bus. That said, there was a young women who was training for the position who tagged along for the day, and she was enthusiastic, friendly and upbeat which helped make our experience more pleasant. The tour itself was very interesting and we enjoyed hiking to the ruins it was an easy hike and absolutely loved cooling off in the lazy river- it was beautiful scenery and pretty clear water.
I am so glad we spent some nights in Tulum and took the time to explore the Sian Ka'an biosphere. it is just beautiful and not heavily traveled so this tour really felt like an escape. The float down the river was so peaceful and the canoeing and ziplining really kept the teens engaged. We even had the Muyil ruins to ourselves which was really peaceful after exploring some of the larger ruin sites with thousands of people!
The day started well, carried on very nicely and ended well. We were very lucky to be a tour of just the two of us and so we're given lots of answers to our questions. Our guide Orajo? was very enthusiastic and passionate about ecology. He looked after us very well. We didn't spend too long at each site so we're never bored. Highlight of the trip apart from the interesting lunch which included tasting grasshoppers of course was the float through the mangroves. We enjoyed the day a lot. Thank you for looking after us.
This trip was just what we wanted. They picked us up from our hotel, had very good knowledge about the area, and I loved that there are not very many people there. A beautiful nature spot. Nice ruins, and highlight of the trip was definitely the river float. A must do. Also DELICIOUS dinner provided
A fabulous experience. Jungle, ruins not heavily explored by tourists, an authentic Mexican picnic, exploring the lagoon in the lagoon in the bio-sphere and the best part: a 45 minute float through a natural mangrove. Knowledgeable, fun and passionate guide and driver: Angela and Antonio.
