What to Expect What to Expect

Complete your stay in Playa del Carmen with a visit to Chichen Itza, the most important archaeological zone on the Yucatan Peninsula. Explore the ancient Mayan city and leave in awe after setting eyes on the extraordinary architectural feats and learning about the mythological lore.
Before Chichen Itza, stop at either the Ikil cenote . The cenotes, Mayan for 'collapsed cave,' are natural sinkholes in the limestone plateau that today offer unique swimming spots with sunlight streaming down from above. Note the lush vegetation growing all around as you make your way down the stairs to reach the cenote and admire the clear, deep water full of fish. You’ll have time to frolic in this natural wonder, so make sure to bring along your swimsuit and towel.
Then head to Chichen Itza! Inside, you’ll be separated into smaller groups for a 1.5-hour tour, during which a certified guide shares the wondrous secrets of this Mayan city.
Admire the Kukulcan Pyramid, also called El Castillo, believed to have been built based on astronomical studies. This four-sided structure contains exactly 365 steps, the number of days in the solar year. Then peer over the sacred cenote, a sinkhole Mayans viewed as a gateway to the afterlife and used as a site for sacrificial offerings.
Walk across the enormous ball court, where the Mayans held athletic events. If the reliefs covering the walls of the court provide any indication, the Mayans took their sports seriously: the sculpted murals show the victor holding the decapitated head of an unlucky member of the team that lost.
At the conclusion of the guided tour, wander the grounds of Chichen Itza at your own pace. Be sure to visit the lesser-known but still very well-preserved temples.
After exploring the site, enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant that includes fresh salads, soups, rice, meat, chicken, fish, vegetables and other regional dishes (drinks at own expense). After lunch, you'll be transported back to your hotel in Playa del Carmen.

Our tour guide Martin was amazing. He is very knowledgeable and patient. He has been a multilingual tour guide for 27 years, and it shows. This tour is important to see and feel some of the beginnings of our current civilization. It is amazing to see where so much of our current technology actually started.

We saw a lot in the scheduled time. The stop for lunch and shopping was much better than a tour taken previously with another company.

A must if you are in Cancun. I learned so much on this tour thanks to our knowledgeable guide. I have a friend who visited on his own a couple years ago without a tour and when I got back and was telling him about it he was bummed he missed so much by not getting a professional tour.

We had a great time on this tour! Our guides, Liz and Gerardo, were really enthusiastic and knowledgable. The journey to Chichen Itza is very long from Playa del Carmen approximately 2:30/3 hours each way so do go prepared! Absolutely loved both Chichen Itza and the Cenote we visited. Truly amazing!

Interesante tour con un buen guía.
Me parece excesivo la parada que se hace en la cooperativa maya y poco tiempo el que se dedica a disfrutar del cenote.

My granddaughter, two sisters and I loved our trip to Chichen Itza. It was one of the highlights to our seven night trip to Playa del Carmen. We weren't sure we should book a tour online before we left or wait until we got there. Glad we made the arrangements beforehand. All we had to do was confirm our reservation at our hotel with a Viator representative. We were picked up in front of our hotel at the time we were told we would. Loved that we were picked up in an air conditioned van with just two other couples and the tour guide. Stopped a couple of times to visit a small Mexican city of Valledolid for pictures and then again for souvenir shopping. Our favorite stop was to swim in a Cenote and have lunch and then of course learning all about Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza was my 21 year old granddaughter's favorite part of our seven night Mexican adventure.

Fantastic tour! Ricardo our guide was amazing. Tour starts with a short stop in Vallaloid, then a stop at a Mayan shop, then lunch and a dip in a beautiful Cenote and then finally a tour of the ruins of Chichen Itza. Really enjoyed chichen itza. It is a long day (and drive) but it is worth it!

Overall a wonderful experience! The Chichen Itza tour was full of Mayan history and culture. Our English speaking guide, Ricardo had so much information to share and was very enthusiastic. I appreciated the explanation and warning about the vendors in Chichen Itza. This also encouraged and validated my purchases at the pre-Chichen Itza stop, a Mayan souvenir shop. I was happy to directly support the Mayan community rather than an unknown vendor. In addition to this itinerary we stopped by a cenote where the included buffet was offered. The actually cenote was amazing and refreshing after our hike through the hot Chichen Itza site. The buffet was of lower quality with minimal variety but I did not book this trip for the food!. Our final stop was through a French/Spanish influenced colonial town. Here there were more traditional Mexican food vendors but the stop was short less than 20 minutes.
If you take this tour be prepared to be on the move. The guide will show and discuss a few places within Chichen Itza and then youll have about 30 minutes to explore yourself. The guides do a great job of letting you know how to exit the site and where the rendezvous points are. If you like to be leisurely or do not want to listen to a tour guide this may not be the tour for you. I thought there was the right amount of time spent at each place within Chichen Itza and throughout the day. About 1.75 hours at Chichen Itza, 1.5 hours at the cenote and a brief stop in the Mexican town. Transportation pick up is available at a selection of major hotels. I did not stay at one, however in my reconfirmation email to Viator, I was able to coordinate which hotel to be picked up from. On the return back to Playa the driver was able to drop me off at my Airbnb and save me a short walk.
Highly recommend this trip. If you can follow directions and are respectful you can really sit back and enjoy the experience.

Our tour guide Martin is very knowledgeable and helpful, so is the English guide Marco we had in chichen itza.
Don't think the Mayan village part is necessary, but like all the other parts of this trip a lot!

We loved this tour. They were on time with picking us up and communicated on where to meet us. Our guide was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We only had a short time in Playa del Carmen and this tour was great to get to see some ruins, experience a cenote and see a Spanish influenced town. I would highly recommend this tour.
