Stop At: Tulum Archaeological Site, Carretera Federal, Cancun - Chetumal Km 230, 307, Tulum 77780 Mexico
Start your Viator Exclusive tour after early departure. Join your guide, a certified archaeologist, for an in-depth tour of Tulum — a walled Mayan city perched atop a cliff that overlooks the sparkling Caribbean Sea. You’ll arrive at the site and take in this tranquility just in time to beat the crowds.
As you tour Tulum, a Mayan word for wall, your guide provides informative commentary. Learn about the archaeological studies of the site and the Mayan civilization that occupied it. Hear evidence that places Tulum as one of the major Mayan cities of the 13th and 14th centuries in Quintana Roo, highlighted by its strategic coastal location, its elevation — the highest of any city the region — and its efficient defense system.
As you stroll among the ruins of this important city, you’ll discover what researchers have uncovered: a political settlement along a commercial route that exploited the rich marine resources off the coast. Today, Tulum is best known for its sandy beaches and the remnants of elaborate murals — once painted a vibrant red and blue over stark white walls.
Return in the afternoon and enjoy the rest of your day. With this Viator Exclusive, your early morning trip to Tulum lets you beat the crowds so you can enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at your own leisure.
Please note: Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to help beat the heat for the duration of your tour. There will be a beach break in Tulum, too, so come prepared with a suit and towel if you plan on swimming.

The tour company was great. Our guide at Tulum was very interesting and full of information. It was a good mix of tour and free time. I’m glad we went early because the crowds when we left were horrendous.
Beautiful and yet sad to see, the coastline is amazing and the architecture is beyond belief.
This is a well kept secret! Get there early before it is too hot and too crowded! Get back to your hotel in time for a swim!
Definitely take the early access to avoid the crowds that arrive by big busloads later in the morning. Having an expert guide makes the trip so much more meaningful.
As was the Chichen Itza trip...another WOW experience and your team different people was once again superlative!
Our guide was so informative! This was a great tour. I think our guide was defiantly the best!
This was a great tour to see the beautiful ruins of Tulum! The bus arrived at our hotel right on time, driven by Antonio. Also on the bus was Maro, our transportation guide. Maro is great! He gave us information about what to expect on the tour and kept us entertained on the drive.
Once we arrived, we were given 20 minutes to look around, use the restroom, and grab coffee from Starbucks. Yes, Starbucks! Please note that they are not fully staffed so the wait is longer than normal...if youre going to get coffee, go there pronto! You can use the restroom at Starbucks while you wait for your drink.
We were then handed over to the trustworthy and knowledgeable hands of our Tulum guide, Nicholas. Nicholas is fantastic!! He provided us with lots of information about Tulum and the Mayan people. When we posed questions, he was ready with answers..and a good sense of humor too. After the tour, we were given an hour to wander around and take photos...I have loads of pictures of iguanas!!
The staff and the tour were really fantastic...and you cant beat the spectacular views from the ruins, its really breathtaking. The best part of this tour though is the timing. They are not lying when they say that as you end your tour you see the throngs of tourists arrive. When we were getting ready to leave, the walkways were PACKED with folks trying to squeeze I. To get a good picture. I highly recommend this tour over others that are later in the day
PS Dont forget to tip all of the guides driver, transportation guide, and guide!!! These folks rely on tips for a living a small 5 tip goes a long way for one person!
Well worth your time! We visited Tulum almost 30 years ago and enjoyed it enough to want to refresh our memories. This trip reminded us of the beauty of the area and gave us additional educational and entertaining information. I don't think we will wait another 30 years before our next visit.
It was a great tour, really recommend the early tour as Tulum gets very crowded by 10-11 a.m. Our Guide Raul was the best tour guide I have ever had. He was a Mayan and was full of information on various migrations to the area, the first Spanish landing, the end of Tulum as a centre and much more.
service provided by Amigo Tours was great, we had an issue with our pick up due to miscommunication and they were able to accommodate us on their next day trip, Tania our Spanish speaking guide was superb she even direct us to take the little train from bus parking area to Tulum entrance as I had a senior with me, highly recommend to take this tour as it gets busy, we had more ppl in our tour that were going to cenote and another attraction Xel Ha I believe and she ensured that everyone was ok.
thank so much Amigo tours your service was great, and reading trip advisor tips helped a lot. recommend you take a fruit with you, as your lunch is chips/juice box and granola bar, 5 stars - well earned
We really loved our decision to use Viator/Early Access to Tulum ruins with Archeologist. Our entire time was spent at the Ruins--not shopping and other extraneous deals offered by other companies. We both highly recommend using Viator for this exclusive trip. P and M Austin, TX
Super late giving this review a few years late actually but this Tour was absolutely amazing definitely learned a lot! Definitely worth your money!
Great tour and so glad we chose the early session. It gets crowded! Especially loved the swim at the end. Don't forget the bug spray!!!
Great tour at a great price. I didn't want to do a tour that took me away from my resort the whole day so this was perfect. We got pikced up on time around 6AM and were back at our resort between 1:30-2:00PM. The early entrance is great, we were the first bus in the parking lot, and as we exited, you can see tons of buses and people arriving. They provide a bottle of water and a brown paper bag with some snacks which I wouldn't call lunch but there are plenty of options before you enter Tulum that you can pay for yourself. There is even a Starbucks onsite. The bus ride was about two hours but it was a big charter bus with AC, plenty of space. It rained the whole time we were there but we were able to purchase ponchos onsite for about 5 a person which were totally worth it. Would recommend this tour.
It was a great experience to see this marvel, guided my someone of Mayan descent who gave us an insight into the abilities of the Mayans in science, architecture and politics.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone in anyway vaguely interested in the marvels of the ancient world
Our tour with Amigos Tours was awesome as it was my first time to the ruins of Tulum. I definitely recommend Amigos and our tour guide Alvaro and driver were also great. Alvaro spoke in both English and Spanish for all the people on the tour. I highly suggest taking the early tour because it is very hot outside and it gets very crowded as the day goes on. We were able to get awesome pics before all the crowds descended upon the place. When we were leaving there was lots of people coming in. These are the only Mayan ruins by the sea and this is an experience in itself. We got there early before the big crowds arrived and were guided along by our guide for about 45minutes and then we had about an hour and a half on our own to explore take pictures and swim at the beach in front of the ruins. We were very lucky as it was a truly beautiful day and sometimes when weather is not good they will not open the beach to swim. Lunch was not included on this tour but a snack bag was provided and there is a restaurant on site on way out if you are hungry as well as little shops with souvenirs. Our bus was a very big air conditioned bus and it was not full at all which made it very comfortable ride. We left hotel at 6am and got back to hotel around 2pm so we had the rest of the day to do whatever we wanted. The day we went was my BIRTHDAY and it made for a birthday to never forget as I got to experience this amazing place with my sister and a couple of good friends! I am glad we did the early access tour with Amigos Tours and would highly recommend this to anyone interested in visiting Tulum.
