My friend and I were the only two on the tour, which really allowed us to ask questions and move through the market at our own pace. Our guide was wonderful!
Couldn't rate this food tour highly enough! The food in the Yucatán region is special enough to begin with, but our guide was very friendly and informative, taking us to the 'hidden' spots in the winding Merida market, a seafood spot and finally an ice cream parlour (with unique flavours!). All the food and drink was included as part of the tour and provided an authentic and special experience.
Our guide Azul was great! We started off with touring the main market in Centro (Mercado Gálvez). We learned how the market was laid out, where to find fish, local produce, regional produce, meats, spices and everything else. We sampled fresh fruits that had never heard of before (our favorite was caimito), we tasted panuchos, salbutos, tacos de cochinita pibil, empanadas de Chaya. We learned about the different spices and chiles of the region. We the left the market and tried seafood tacos at El Marlin and finished with ice cream and sorbet at a new place called Pola.Great tour.
Excellent tour, I only wish we had booked it sooner. We went to the main market in Merida, our guide telling us about the sights as we walked there. We tried a variety of dishes tamales, empanadas, tacos, salbutos, panuchos plus some fruit drinks and horchata to wash it all down. Then on to a fish restaurant for ceviche and finally an ice cream shop for dessert. Our guide was very friendly and informative throughout. We were in Mexico for two weeks and if I was asked to rate my experiences I would say this tour and our visit to Uxmal were the best.
Our guide Jose is a very likable young man who gave us insight into the Mayan culture, especially the culinary culture. Mayans are friendly and the city is very safe.
This tour was not only fun, but was also very useful and educational. I would recommend that every first time visitor to Merida go on this tour, if possible on your first day in town. Everything we tried was very delicious and the tour makes the market less intimidating.
Great tour of busy local market for foodies. It is the real thing.
Don't miss this if you are in Merida.
Our guide was terrific and very knowledgeable. The market needs a good power wash so if you are squeamish there were a couple of stops that may make you hesitate. Overall, the food we tasted was very good and the experience was fun.
The Merida Street Food Walking Tour was a good experience. It introduced us to some of the local specialties and a great trip through the market showing the ingredients used in Yucatecan cooking. The selection of foods was a little limited, as was the information on the history of Merida. But our guide, Laura, was a gem: personable, cheerful, truly bilingual, and an excellent source of information about the various foods we were trying. The tour was good, but could use some improvement.
Our guide for the tour was José Luis Trejo. What a great tour it was. Me and my wife were delighted by the wonderful introduction to the culinary delights of Merida by Jose. He is a great tour guide and we thoroughly enjoyed his company. We tasted so many types of Yucatan foods and fruits. Learned a lot about the market and Mexican culture along the way. Thanks a lot Jose - our journey to Mexico would have been incomplete without meeting you along the way!!!
Jose was an excellent guide. We tasted an excellent variety of food and Jose carefully explained each item we tasted. He also offered a beverage at each food stop. We explored the market which was fascinating and very busy. It was helpful to have someone guide us through. We ended the tour with local ice cream which happened to be right near our hotel. We highly recommend this tour.
Great tour! Our guide,Jose Luis was very knowledgable and explained the different types of Yucatan foods and fruits. We tasted many amazing foods, fruits, and juices with gelato as the finally. The mercado was amazing. We would definitely recommend this tour to everyone visiting Merida who wants to learn about and taste Yucatan food. You won't go hungry.
We took this tour at the very beginning of our stay in Merida so we would know good places that we could safely eat street food. Suri was our guide. She is a chef and really knows the market and food! We samples salbutes, panuchos, tamal, mamey fruit--and several others, and al pastor the meat on a spit in the marketplace. Then we went to have lunch! We ate wonderful ceviche and then wandered over to Pola for gelato. Wow! Also, Suri assisted us in purchasing some achiote at her favorite spice vendor. She also sent us the cookbook that she and her team developed for their cooking class--it is a 30 page PDF that really has all the Yucatecan specialties in it. We cannot recommend this more highly. Since the tour runs with as few as 2 people, our tour was just us and very personalized.
This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Mérida! José Luis was an outstanding guide, who expertly led us through the maze of the Mercado Lucas de Galvez to sample the very best examples of Yucatecan specialties. He explained the ingredients and cooking techniques of everything we were tasting and answered our many questions. On our own, we may not have tasted as many food items and we were so grateful for José Luis' guidance and encouragement. He followed up as well by emailing recipes. As it was the first morning of our trip, the walking/tasting tour served as a great orientation to central historic district, and helped us choose restaurants and make more adventurous menu decisions during the trip. We highly recommend this delicious and informative tour!
We had a very unique experience going to an absolutely gigantic market in the heart of Merida and walking around seeing all the stands and tasting all the different foods. Our guide Jose, was warm, obliging and filled with information. We had a great time and would highly recommend going.
We had a fun time during this tour. In the process, we discovered a fun and unusual ice-cream place... Pola Gelato!
