We booked this tour in early February 2018 as an open tour but we were the only people on it so it was essentially a private tour. Picked up right on time at our central hotel by driver Alonso and Translator Melissa in a sedan. Melissa spoke excellent English - it was her first day on the job. Its a 3 hour drive to get to Sierra Chincua. Seeing the butterflies was absolutely magical - the sun came out and there were literally millions of them fluttering all about us. If you are quiet you can hear the sound of their wings. You have to have a local guide with you when you trek up to the butterflies - its a way of helping locals be employed which I can appreciate its a poor area of Mexico and you also dont want tourists running rampant in the National Park. Although he did not speak English, Melissa translated and we learned a lot about their life cycle. Our advice is to take the horses when offered - these mountains are very high in elevation and you will definitely feel it. Although the horses only take you so far, it covers the steepest part. Its quite cheap at only 200 pesos plus a tip. Its only about a mile from where the horses stop of reasonably level path to the butterflies. After around an hour with the butterflies, lunch was provided in the little village at the start of the trail - cooked while you wait. Very fresh and delicious with blue corn tortillas made in front of you. After this a visit to El Oro, one of Mexicos 111 magic towns. Its a pretty little town and nice to hear from Melissa some local information about the religious festivals happening that day. All in all, a wonderful day.
The trip to the butterflies was 3 hours with pick up along the way. We then had to walk a total of 8,5km to get to the butterflies - so not just a 45 min walk. If you have people on the trip that are unfit and too old to walk this, by the time you are back for lunch they have not even got half the way. We then had to sit 2,5 hours to wait for them to come back and have their lunch. We then got taken to a town El Oreo to see some buildings waste of time when you are already almost 3 hours delayed. By the time we got back to the city it was 8h30 at night - over 13 hours since pick up. I was disappointed to also not see that many butterflies as the season was almost over - mid March. Would not do it again
The guide and the driver was very friendly and gave me a lot of information. Though you can not see the butterfly very good the trip is very interesting.
I was disappointed with this tour. It is stating that a local guide is included but I'm not sure about the definition. My guide picked me up at my hotel on time, he didn't speak much English but he had a translator so it's OK. But when we arrived the butterfly sanctuary, I was told I had a local guide there. i was confused and I'm still confused why I needed a local guide there. That local guide didn't speak English at all and you really don't need anyone to show you the way you should walk because the trail is very obvious so it's very difficult to get lost. And if it was easy to get lost there, the guide who picked me up should know the way. And in the end, I had to tip that local guide! For what???? For walking by my side?
This was the best tour we took! It was a relaxing day out of the city with a fresh delicious lunch. There was horseback riding and not to forget the miraculous butterflies. It was amazing to see.
