Overview Overview

The Danakil Depression is a place most people do not imagine exists in real life. And the experience of actually going there and having the colorful other worldly photos to remember it by is often the highlight of many visitors' trip to Ethiopia. We would love to share this experience with more visitors to Ethiopia and show them one of our most amazing sights.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from Addis to Mekele then drive to Hamedella

Stop At: Danakil Depression, 0125 Ethiopia
We have a long and exhausting travel day ahead but it is well worth it to get to one of the most extraordinary places on earth! Take a morning flight to Mekele from Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in Mekele, we will pick you up to begin the drive the remainder of the way to the Danakil Desert. This is one of the lowest and hottest inhabited places on earth, with daytime temperatures often reaching up to 50 °C. Upon arrival in Hamedella we take off on our first excursion in the desert. We head to see just a few of the other worldly landscapes before toasting the sunset on Lake Asale. Bring your swimsuit if you would like to float in a special saline pool.
Duration: 3 hours

Meals included:
• Lunch: Vegetarian pasta dish
• Dinner: To meet all dietary restrictions meals are vegan or vegetarian.
Accommodation included: Overnight camping under the stars. We provide the cot, mattress, and fresh sheets.

Day 2: Hamedella to Dallol then on to Mekelle Airport

Stop At: Danakil Depression, 0125 Ethiopia
This morning we get an early start after breakfast. Today we see the best part of the Danakil Depression, Dallol. Here we witness scenery like no other on earth. It is a sensory experience as

you walk on the bright neon colored salt, iron, sulfur and potash deposits. You feel the heat of the earth under your feet, while listening to the bubbling water beneath you and know you are

in a one of a kind place. We also explore the salt pillars of the Danakil Depression, some say they look similar to Cappadocia. We also stop by the Afar salt miners to see the centuries old process of salt mining and if we are lucky the camel caravan. After we've taking the most unbelievable photos, you won't need a filter for we start the long drive back to Mekelle.
