It's a Greek language lesson for absolute beginners or beginners and not an experience for a tourist. The activities (in this case, the participation in olive harvest) help us to transform the course into a fully immersion language program.
Ikarian Center is a Greek language school for non-native speakers, based in Ikaria. Since 1995 we offer Greek courses for all levels in a mountainous location, just outside the settlement of Arethousa, on the island of Ikaria. The classes have been attended by many interpreters and translators, mainly from European Union institutions, diplomats, university students, teachers of ancient Greek and classicists. However, the atmosphere in the lessons is extremely friendly and not at all official. Students learn through a multitude of language games and activities.

Students will attend intensive Greek language lessons for 3 hours every morning 9:00 - 12:30. The course lasts for 11 days, one day in the middle is free of lessons. Total hours of instruction 30 (of 60' min).
After the language lesson, students who wish can work for a few hours harvesting olives in the nearby fields, optionally and for fun; we are not expecting our students to harvest all the trees of the region However, in this way students will have the opportunity to find out how the olive oil is produced, also to meet some locals and speak with them. We will also visit an oil press and watch how olive oil is made from the olives.
Additional course activities include visits to local families, cooking lessons by the teachers or women of the village, slide shows, conversation classes, film projections, lessons with Greek songs and traditional dance lessons with locals. If possible, we also participate in one of the small scale panigiris of the season, with good food and music, but without the multicolor crowd of the summer.
