Question

What is a P0019 code?

Engine code P0019 is defined as “Crankshaft Position – Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 2 Sensor ‘B,’” meaning the powertrain control module (PCM) has sensed that the crankshaft and Bank 2 exhaust camshaft are not in sync.

The timing chain or belt links the camshafts and crankshafts. The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) finds the position of the crankshaft and transmits that information to the PCM. At the same time, a camshaft position sensor (CMP) finds the position of every camshaft and transmits the information to the PCM. To avoid engine issues, the timing of the camshaft and crankshaft should be correct.

What are the symptoms of the P0019 code?

These are some common signs you can observe when the code gets triggered.

  • The check engine light illuminates
  • The car engine cranks but won’t start
  • Increase in fuel consumption
  • Engine performance decreases
  • The engine shows hesitation when accelerated
  • Above idle, the engine may operate erratically or roughly
  • Engine rattling

What causes a P0019 code?

These are some common reasons this code shows up in your car.

  • A defective PCM
  • Low oil level
  • Problems with the timing chain
  • Defective crankshaft/camshaft sensor
  • Slipped/broken tone ring on crankshaft/camshaft
  • Defective VVT actuator
  • Faulty VVT actuator solenoid
  • Defective or worn-out chain tensioner/timing belt or guides
  • Problems with the circuit
  • The engine oil used doesn’t match the manufacturer’s requirements
  • The crankshaft balancer bolt is loose or missing

What repairs can fix the P0019 code?

These are some steps that a mechanic follows to fix this error code.

  • Scan, reset, and test drive the car to see whether the code reappears.
  • Replace the camshaft sensor with the Bank 2 camshaft.
  • Make required repairs to the wiring connections of the Oil Control Valve (OCV) or the camshaft sensor.
  • Replace the PCM.
  • Replace the timing chain, guides, and gears for both engine banks.
  • To ensure correct oil viscosity, replace the oil and oil filter.

How much does it cost to fix the P0019 code?

Ideally, fixing code P0019 can cost you between $200 and $500 for sensor replacements. Still, it may go over $1,000–$3,000+ if the actual problem is a severe mechanical failure or a stretched timing chain. The actual fix cost may differ based on whether the problem is a simple wiring issue, a sensor issue, or a complex timing component repair.

Repair type Estimated repair cost
Diagnosis $100–$150
Repairing wiring/connector $50–$150
Replacing the camshaft/crankshaft sensor $120-$350
Replacing the timing chain/belt $500–$1,200+
Reprogramming or replacing the PCM $800–$1,400+

Can I drive with a P0019 code?

No, we don’t recommend driving the car with this error code, as it can cause severe damage to the engine. These are some consequences that the error code can cause.

  • Carbon buildup in the car’s engine may cause bad spark plugs, resulting in misfires.
  • If the timing chain guides or tensioners fail, the chain can skip gear teeth. This results in severe engine damage as the pistons and valves collide.
  • Driving your car for a long time with camshaft issues can lead to symptoms like stalling, misfires, and no starts.
