Registering your car in a state that is different from your driver\u2019s license state is illegal. It will incur penalties from the state and your insurer. However, some states allow you to register your car even if you\u2019re not a resident. But this will cost you higher auto insurance and car registration fees. Also, some drivers get exceptions if they fulfill certain criteria.<\/p>\n<h2>States that allow you to register a car without a permanent residency<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Colorado<\/li>\n<li>California<\/li>\n<li>New York<\/li>\n<li>Florida<\/li>\n<li>Massachusetts<\/li>\n<li>Georgia<\/li>\n<li>Missouri<\/li>\n<li>Maine<\/li>\n<li>Indiana<\/li>\n<li>Delaware<\/li>\n<li>Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>North Dakota<\/li>\n<li>South Dakota<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Exceptions for registering your car in a different state<\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned, there are exceptions where you can register your car in two different states.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Active-duty military personnel:<\/strong> If you\u2019re a military personnel on active duty in another state, you\u2019ll be able to register your car even though your driver\u2019s license is from your home state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Students studying out of state: <\/strong>Students attending college out of state can register their cars in the state where they\u2019re attending the college.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual residency: <\/strong>If you have homes in two states, you can register your car in the one you drive the most or in both states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why is it critical that the state of car registration and driver\u2019s license should match?<\/h2>\n<p>If you don\u2019t qualify for any of the exemptions, you should register your car in the state where you hold your driver\u2019s license. These are a few reasons.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the law, it is illegal to drive a car with an out-of-state registration and license that doesn\u2019t match your residency.<\/li>\n<li>The car registration and driver\u2019s license are tied to the state of permanent residency.<\/li>\n<li>The insurance policy should match the address where your car is garaged and the location of your registration and driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Moving out of state? Or have dual residency?
