If you have\u00a0permission\u00a0to drive the car and\u00a0have a valid license, then you can drive a car that is not your own.\u00a0The driver who drives your\u00a0car\u00a0is a permissive driver.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When a driver has permission to drive your car, your insurance is also shared. If your friend, roommate, or someone else not on your policy is driving your car and causes an accident, your liability insurance will pay for the damage they cause to other drivers or their cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are some exceptions to this, though.\u00a0If an excluded driver gets behind the wheel, your insurance\u00a0won’t<\/span>\u00a0cover any accidents\u00a0or damages.\u00a0Similarly, if\u00a0<\/span>you give your\u00a0car\u00a0to someone who\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0have a license\u00a0or who should have been on your policy but\u00a0wasn’t, or to someone who\u00a0drives it while drunk\u00a0or high, your auto insurance policy\u00a0probably\u00a0won’t\u00a0cover the damage they cause.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does my insurance cover me if I drive someone else’s car?<\/h3>\n

This depends on what is going on. For instance, if you rent a car, your auto insurance may cover you while you drive the rented car. But if you borrow a friend’s car, you are covered as the main driver under their auto insurance policy. If you cause an accident while driving your friend’s car and the damage exceeds their policy coverage, your auto insurance will kick in as extra coverage and pay for the rest of the costs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you still need car insurance if you\u00a0don’t\u00a0own a car?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

You don’t need to buy your auto insurance policy if you occasionally borrow or rent cars. But if you often borrow or rent cars, you might want to get “non-owner car insurance” to protect yourself. Non-owner car insurance is a stripped-down form of auto insurance that is mostly meant to ensure you have your own liability coverage. If you’re driving someone else’s car and cause an accident where the losses are more than the owner’s insurance limits, non-owner car insurance makes sure you have liability coverage to pay for those costs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
