These transmissions work differently from traditional automatics, and if you haven’t spent much time diagnosing them, it’s easy to get stuck.

You don’t need to be a transmission specialist to get started, though. Knowing how a CVT works and what to look for will help when one rolls into your shop, and it’ll keep you from recommending an expensive repair you didn’t need to.

What is a CVT?

CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, it has two cone-shaped pulleys connected by a steel belt or chain. One of them is linked to the engine, and the other drives the wheels. A CVT gearbox transmits power from the engine to the drivetrain by varying its ratio continuously instead of shifting between set gears. This flexibility allows it to seamlessly adapt to changing driving conditions in real time.

What are the main types of CVT?

CVTs come in different types, so you’ll need to know which one you’re dealing with.

Belt and chain CVTs are the ones most mechanics know. Most passenger cars with a CVT use one of these.

Toroidal CVTs replace the belt or chain with rotating discs and power rollers.

Hydrostatic CVTs use pumps and fluid flow to produce rotational motion. You’re more likely to see them in off-highway vehicles and equipment.

eCVTs are found in many hybrids. They use a planetary gearset and electric motor-generators to blend power, with no belt or pulleys.

Why does this matter in the shop? The internal design, fluid requirements, service procedures, and diagnostic approach can differ a lot from one type to the next. Always check the service information for the exact vehicle instead of assuming all CVTs work alike.

What are some common CVT service mistakes?

Using the wrong fluid

When it comes to fluid, you can’t just use any automatic transmission fluid. CVT fluid needs the right friction characteristics, hydraulic performance, and heat resistance for that specific transmission. For example, many Nissan CVTs need NS-2 or NS-3, and some Honda CVTs require HCF-2.

There are some aftermarket companies that provide “universal” or “multi-vehicle” fluid. In such cases, don’t assume the product is right. You need to confirm that it meets the exact specification for the vehicle you’re servicing.

Getting the fluid level wrong

Many CVTs don’t have a conventional dipstick. They use a level plug or an overflow tube instead. Depending on the transmission, the vehicle may need to be level and the fluid within a specific temperature window. Some procedures call for a range of roughly 95–115°F. An incorrect fluid level can cause drivability problems and may even lead you to misdiagnose a healthy transmission.

Ignoring what the old fluid tells you

Before you drain the fluid, take a good look at its condition. Dark fluid, a burnt smell, or heavy metallic debris can all be warning signs.

A small amount of fine wear material can be normal, depending on the transmission and its service history. But if you find significant metal in the pan, a fluid change won’t fix the problem. Large chunks usually mean an internal component is already damaged.

Guessing the service interval

Fluid maintenance is important, especially with frequent stop-and-go driving, high temperatures, and towing. That said, the requirements for when the fluid needs to be changed vary by manufacturer, transmission, and driving conditions.

Some manufacturers call for a periodic drain and fill, while others base service on a maintenance reminder system. Follow the schedule and procedure for the vehicle in your bay.

Skipping resets and relearn procedures

Depending on the application, the transmission control module (TCM) may need a fluid deterioration counter reset, an adaptation relearn, or a specific warm-up procedure after certain repairs. Some of these are required after a valve body or TCM replacement, while others depend on the type of service performed.

The fluid deterioration counter is a virtual algorithm that tracks how long the fluid has been exposed to high temperatures. Only some CVTs have one.

Working without proper cleanliness

CVT hydraulics have tight tolerances, so dirt is a real problem. Clean the area around the fill plug or dipstick tube before you open it, and use clean tools and containers. Check the service information for the specific transmission before deciding which parts need replacing.

What are some common CVT complaints?

When a customer comes in with a complaint, there are a few likely ones you’ll hear. Here’s how to approach them:

Shudder or judder on light throttle: Check the fluid level and condition first, then look for technical service bulletins (TSBs) and software updates. Depending on the design, also inspect the torque converter or start clutch. Rule out engine misfires and worn engine or transmission mounts, since both can mimic a CVT shudder.

Whining noise: Check for low fluid, then look at the pump, bearings, and belt or chain and pulley wear.

Slipping or rpm flare: Check fluid condition, line pressure, solenoid performance, and belt or chain wear.

Delayed engagement: Check fluid level, line pressure, and the valve body.

Limp mode or overheating: Check for codes, then the fluid, the cooler and lines, and any thermal management components.

How to approach a CVT complaint

Road test the vehicle when it’s safe to do so. If your shop has a known-good vehicle of the same model, compare the two. Some engine drone and a rubber-band feel are normal for many CVTs, so don’t chase a normal characteristic.

You need to scan the whole vehicle for codes and freeze frame data. Some examples of diagnostic codes include P0730 (incorrect gear ratio) and P0868 (transmission fluid pressure low). Review live data too, such as ratio, pulley speeds, line pressure, and fluid temperature.

Check TSBs and software updates. Some CVT complaints have manufacturer-documented fixes that involve software or updated procedures.

Inspect the fluid, following the correct temperature and level-check procedure.

Rule out misfires, mounts, and driveline issues, which can feel like a CVT fault.

Run a pressure test or a cooler flow check where the service information calls for it.

By this point, you should be able to make a much clearer diagnosis. Document what you found and explain why you’re recommending the repair. If the job needs equipment or experience your shop doesn’t have, referring it to a transmission specialist is better than guessing.

CVTs work differently from traditional automatics, which is why many shops hesitate to take them on.
