Despite the fact that the fifth generation has been off production for four years, whispers of a comeback persist. At this point in time, the appearance of the Dodge Viper 2023 seems based more on hope than reality. Not that we shouldn’t speculate on what the 2023 Dodge Viper could look and feel like or what its design features should be like! After all, who does not look back fondly at the memories of the iconic true-blue American supercar, the Viper?

But before that, let’s see what made the Dodge Viper so special and why they stopped making it.

When did they stop making the Dodge Viper?

In October 2015, Fiat Chrysler announced they would stop manufacturing the Viper in 2017.

Why was the Dodge Viper discontinued?

In 2010, the fourth generation of the Viper ended with strong sales. They paused briefly to update to a new Viper that would completely destroy t eir rivals. And come up, they did! The 2013 SRT Viper was an excellent ride. Its legendary V10 engine was fine-tuned to produce 645 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, putting it at the top of its class.

The problem was that the Viper just did not sell well enough. Only 630 Vipers were sold in 2016! Then came the new side curtain airbag rules that went into effect in August 2017. At that point, Fiat Chrysler (FCA) chose to pull the plug on the  Dodge Viper. They shut down its Conner Assembly Plant in Michigan.

What was so special about the Dodge Viper?

When it was first released in 1992, the Dodge Viper didn’t just look awesome; it also had some serious horsepower and other performance chops beneath the hood. The first  Viper housed a mighty V-10 engine that dispensed 8.0 liters of displacement. Designers from Lamborghini, which Chrysler Corporation owned at the time, helped create the Viper.

Only speed was a priority in the original Viper’s design. There were no door handles or air conditioning units on the exterior since they would have slowed the vehicle down. Eventually, all models would have air conditioning and a cassette player that could rival the sound quality of the best CDs. In 1996, the Viper got its recognizable stripes.

Americans found the Viper hard to resist because

  • It’s rather surprising affordability
  • It came with an air of actual danger
  • The Viper won races all over the world
  • Nothing like this had ever been made in America before
  • The glorious V10 engine
  • Carrol Shelby himself built it
  • Those looks, those curves!

How much does a Dodge Viper cost?

According to Edmunds, the average cost of a pre-owned Dodge Viper is $97,791. KBB puts the MSRP for a base 2017 Viper at roughly $93,000. This price includes the destination charge and the gas-guzzler tax of $2,600. The base price of a track-focused Viper ACR is over $120,000, and the base price of a luxurious Viper GTS is over $111,000.

What would the Dodge Viper 2023 really look like today?

If wishes were horses, right? But if the Dodge Viper did return, we’re predicting one major change:

The 2023 Dodge Viper could be electric

Don’t be up in arms already; just hear us out! By now, most of us are comfortable with the idea that automakers would switch out the gasoline engines in their cars for electric ones. Ford’s going electric, so are GTs like BMW, and Aston Martin, as are the luxurious Genesis and Rolls-Royce.

It would not be unprecedented for the Viper to return in an electric avatar. Yes, you could argue that a Viper isn’t a real Viper until it has the trademark  V10 growl. However, fixes are available, such as the synthetic engine noise used in the most recent Tesla models.

The 2023 Dodge Viper could drop the V10 for the V8

They could replace the V10 with the lighter V8 without sacrificing the immense HP. The Viper’s V10 model pushes a mind-bending 550 horsepower, and the V8 engine can retain that. Or it could use the same engine as the Charger SRT Hellcat and give us an HP closer to 800! Boom, how brilliant would that be!

The 2023 Dodge Viper could have more comfy interiors

Could we hope for more premium components, plushier seats, and all the tech bells and whistles we see in modern cars? Some of the new displays would be nice! We hope for at least a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a digital gauge cluster with customization options, a smartphone connection via Uconnect 4 and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a six-speaker sound system.

Is the Dodge Viper coming back in 2023?

As far as we know, Dodge is not planning on reviving the Viper in 2023, despite the immense love and fan following the car has. We’re still hearing plenty of rumors, but there has been no official announcement from Dodge or its parent company, Stellantis. In fact, Stellantis flatly denied that a new Viper was in the works when asked about the rebirth.

A future resurrection of the Viper is possible at present, but until an actual event occurs, any claims or speculations are likely to be wishful thinking.
