Thinking about a set of new rims for your car? If you ride a fairly common make and model, chances are you’re looking for 5×4.5 bolt pattern wheels. So, here’s all you need to know about this small but significant part of your car.
When replacing car wheels, the replacement rims must match the vehicle’s specified lug pattern. Otherwise, the mismatched bolt patterns could lead to issues with the car’s brake and suspension. So, before learning more about the 5×4.5 bolt pattern, let’s find out what a car’s lug/bolt pattern is and why it is important.
What is a lug pattern in cars?
The lug/bolt pattern of car wheels refers to the number and distance between lug hole openings on the rim. So, for example, if your wheel has five studs/lugs and the distance between two opposite lugs is 4.5 inches, then your car has a 5×4.5 bolt pattern measurement.
Number of lug/stud hole openings x the distance between opposite lugs = Wheel Bolt Pattern
Any one can count the number of lugs on your car wheels, but measuring the distance between them isn’t simple. So, here’s how you measure a car’s bolt pattern:
Step 1: Count the number of stud/lug holes on the wheel.
Step 2: Measure the distance from the center of one bolt to the outer edge of the bolt furthest away.
What is a 5×4.5 bolt pattern?
5×4.5 is the most common bolt pattern in cars and SUVs used today. Travel/utility trailer wheels also have this bolt pattern.
There are multiple 5-lug car wheels with varying diameters: 5×4.5, 5×4.75, 5×5, etc. The 5.45 bolt pattern is called the Ford Bolt Pattern or Passenger Car Bolt Pattern. Ford Motors began using the 5×4.5 bolt pattern in the 50s, and over the years, Ford Mustangs, Fairlane, and several other models have used it. Other car manufacturers also began using it, and it was usually called the “small ford” pattern.
Note: 5×114.3 is the 5×4.5 bolt pattern in mm; 4.5 inches equals 114.3 millimeters. You may find 5×114.3 written in some specifications – but it’s just the same bolt pattern in millimeters instead of inches. Another variation is 5×4-1/2 inches.
What vehicles have a 5×4.5 bolt pattern? Several Chrysler, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Maserati, Mazda, Nissan, Renault, Subaru, and Toyota models. Tesla Model 3 (2017 – 2022) and Tesla Model Y (2020 – 2022) also use it.

Are all 5-lug rims universal?
Can you use any 5-lug rim for your car? No, there are no universal rims. So, if you are replacing your car wheels – due to wear and tear or for a customized look – the bolt pattern of the new rims must match the pattern of the car’s hub. So, before you buy the rims, check the vehicle’s wheel specs and determine the size and offset.
The offset is as important as your car wheel’s bolt pattern; it is the distance at which your wheels stick out from the car’s body. If the offset does not match the vehicle specifications, you’ll have to modify it to avoid serious car suspension and brake problems. Lower-profile tires may help adjust the wheel size if your new rims are too large.
Because there are multiple 5-lug bolt patterns with only slight differences in diameters, ensure an accurate measurement before buying new rims. You can check a bolt pattern guide or use a bolt pattern gauge.
