A clean engine bay can save you big bucks

Dirt and grease can accumulate in the engine bay if you don’t clean it regularly. This accumulated dirt can adversely affect the surrounding components. However, the misfortune does not end there; these components can start to underperform and, in the worst of cases, can get damaged beyond repair. Replacing the components with new ones can cost you a lot of money! A clean engine bay is not just vital for your car’s performance; it can also save you big bucks.

A Step-By-Step Guide to A Clean Engine Bay

A step-by-step guide to a clean engine bay

Protect delicate components

Before you start cleaning the engine bay, make sure to wrap all delicate components like the battery, air intake, and the engine control unit with plastic bags or cling-wrap. If you’re cleaning your engine bay for the very first time, then we’d highly recommend you follow this step.

Start the engine detailing process with a rinse

Start the cleaning process by clearing off the dirt inside the engine bay with water. This is to help the engine degreaser spread further. You can use a power washer – on a light setting – or a sprayer to rinse. Remember not to use too much water in places that don’t dry easily.

Apply the engine degreaser or engine cleaner

Apply the engine degreaser or engine cleaner on areas filled with oil and grease. We recommend using an engine degreaser as it removes stains and grease without being corrosive. Next, start applying the degreaser on all areas of the engine bay. You can also use a small brush to reach any nooks and crannies. Allow the engine cleaner to sit for 2-3 minutes in order to get the dirt to loosen up.

Rinse again

Now, rinse the engine bay once more to wash away all the degreaser. If you find any missed spots, repeat the same process mentioned above.

Dry it with a microfiber towel

Use the microfiber towel to dry the engine bay. You can also use a car drying blower if you have one. Finally, go ahead and remove the plastic covers on the components.

End the process with engine dressing

This is an add-on step you can follow if you want and can be skipped if you’re not too keen on the extra time spent. You can use a spray-on engine dressing to give your engine bay a lustrous shine and a brand-new look.

If you seem confused or in doubt at any point in the engine detailing process, we’d recommend that you consult an auto detailing professional. If you find these DIY steps time-consuming and complicated, you can get your engine detailed and cleaned from a car detailing center near you.
