Air travel on an upswing, but airport parking woes continue

Air travel in the US has hit another pandemic-era record, with major airports across the country being packed with vacationers. The Transportation Security Administration said it screened more than 2.2 million people at airport checkpoints on Sunday, the highest number since the pandemic struck the country. That topped a record set just two days earlier and was the fourth peak recorded in July.

While one would assume that airlines would be buoyant by the recent surge in air travel, it’s far from reality. Shares of airlines, cruise lines, hotels, and other travel-related establishments plummeted last week because of the growing concern about highly contagious variants of Covid-19.

Over the past few weeks, many airlines have stated that domestic leisure travel is back to pre-pandemic levels. Unfortunately, the number of people opting for international travel or business trips is still significantly lower than the same period in 2019. This has hit airlines such as American, United, and Delta significantly as they get a sizeable chunk of revenue from international and business travelers. The rise in coronavirus infections has led to several international travel restrictions, and they are likely to continue for a few more months.

Meanwhile, there was even more cause for frustration for air travelers flying out of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Philly airport parking has become scarcer than ever, with the airport’s economy parking lot being closed since March 2020. Last week, another long-term lot announced its plans to shut down this month. Operated by PreFlight Airport Parking, the privately-owned parking lot at 4700 Island Ave. Stopped accepting cars as of July 14. The lack of adequate airport parking spaces has led to many travelers missing their flights as they now have to drive around for hours to find a good spot to park their vehicles.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, people faced delays of up to 90 minutes due to storms. To make matters worse, the Newark airport parking authority was forced to shut down its economy lot due to flooding. With flash flood warnings in effect, drivers were asked to use different lots for Newark airport parking.

With domestic travel on an upswing, one of the busiest airports in the country, Hartsfield-Jackson International, has been implementing new strategies to manage traffic. With long lines inside and outside the terminals, the airport has now announced that it will allow patrons to pay for parking with their Peach Pass at the new ATL West deck starting next week. While that’s good news for many, there’s a bit of bad news too! After cutting its parking rates during the early part of the pandemic last year, Atlanta airport parking rates have returned to pre-pandemic rates this month. Economy parking near the terminal now costs $14 a day, while daily parking is $19 a day.

If you’re planning on traveling this summer, be sure to book your Atlanta airport parking, Philly airport parking, and Newark airport parking as soon as you’ve booked your flight tickets. To avoid long queues at security checks, airlines and airports have recommended that passengers arrive early at understaffed airports. You don’t want to be rushing around for a parking spot and get delayed. To find a guaranteed parking spot, check out parking websites or apps like way.com, where you could find spots, compare rates, and keep yourself safe with the help of contactless payment methods.
