Are EV Batteries Recyclable? Things to Know

Spread the love

Are EV batteries recyclable? How long do they last? What happens to the worn-out batteries? How do you replace your old EV batteries?

EVs have a growing demand globally due to the increasing fuel prices daily. However, it is also important to know the lifespan of your battery and dispose of them at the right time. Delaying the replacement may affect your driving and can pull down the range of your car. Here’s everything you need to know about EV battery recycling.

Where is the EV battery located in your car?

It is important to know where is your EV battery located. The bottom center of your car holds your EV batteries.

What do EV batteries contain?

So, what’s inside your EV battery? Electric vehicle batteries contain lithium, manganese, cobalt, graphite, steel, and nickel. All these components together help in the smooth functioning of the battery, thereby adding to the EV’s efficiency

What is the lifespan of an EV battery?

EV batteries are one of the best inventions of technology, which aim to provide the best benefits to their users. An EV battery lasts for 15-20 years, adding to your car’s improved performance. The easiest way to know if your battery is dead or dying is to check for a turtle icon blinking on your dashboard.

What is the weight of an EV battery?

The weight of an EV battery is around 1000 to 2000 pounds, depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

What are the different types of EV batteries?

There are many types of electric vehicle batteries, such as:

Lead acid battery

Most EVs prefer using lead-acid batteries for better performance and affordable rates. However, with increasing research and developments, this is now the least-used type of electric vehicle battery. Similarly, the newer kinds of batteries, unlike the lead acid battery, are lightweight, and you can easily change them

The recycling cost of a lead acid battery ranges between $5 to $20, depending on your location.

Nickel-metal-hydride battery

Nickel-metal-hydride acts as a backup for lead acid batteries when they drain out. These are also safer to handle and perform better than lead batteries. Hybrid vehicles make the most of these batteries due to their short life.

Another setback of using these is that they discharge quickly and are non-recyclable. Hence, you must maintain a backup. It costs only about $1 to $2 to recycle these batteries as they cause less negative environmental impact

Lithium-ion battery

Lithium-ion is the oldest type of electric vehicle battery which many prefer due to its sustainability and high power. The performance of these batteries is higher, and they don’t overheat. However, the lifespan and efficiency of these batteries compensate for their cost.

Similarly, the power discharge time of these batteries is many times more than the other kinds of electric vehicle batteries. If you plan to recycle these types of EV batteries, it should cost you $1 to $2 per pound of battery.

Other types of EV batteries you should know

Here are a few other types of electric vehicle batteries you must be familiar to:

Solid-state battery

Solid state is the best recyclable type of EV battery, which is also a promising futuristic solution for EVs.  One of the best benefits of choosing these EV batteries is that they don’t overheat. Secondly, solid-state batteries don’t consume much space and aren’t much heavy.

The recycling costs of solid-state batteries are variable since these batteries are still technologically evolving. These batteries may cost variably depending on the market value of materials recovered and the process of recovering them.

Lithium Sulfur battery

Lithium Sulfur batteries or Li S batteries are the best in terms of energy production and one of the best recyclable types. Li S batteries have a lifespan of providing 1500 charge and discharge cycles before they expire.

These come with voltage regulators, which keep an optimum amount of power backup even after you use them. While these EV batteries are recyclable, their recycling costs are slightly higher than expected. Depending on your battery’s weight, recycling may cost you $1 to $2 per battery.

Are Electric Vehicle Batteries Recyclable?

What should I do with expired EV batteries?

Hold on if you plan to dispose of your expired electric vehicle batteries. Your EV batteries are 100% reusable. Here’s what you may do with your old batteries.

Recycle

Two effective ways of recycling EV batteries are hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgy is the process where harmful and non-harmful components of the batteries undergo separation and recycling. This segregation of harmful materials will positively impact disposing of the batteries.

Pyrometallurgy is just the reverse of the former process of extracting metals from e-waste. When you dispose of EV batteries this way, metals are recovered, and you may safely dispose of the waste.

Repurpose

You may also repurpose your electric vehicle batteries at home or for commercial purposes. The power from your old batteries can benefit energy suppliers who may use them when they face more demand. Otherwise, you may also convert your EV batteries as a solar-battery backup.

However, don’t expect these batteries to be as efficient as new ones. On repurposing, your EV batteries can retain 60% power for second use. You may also give away your batteries to energy communities that extract the existing energy from EV batteries and sustainably use them in lighter vehicles.

Dispose

If you think you have no way out, you may dispose of your EV batteries, but do it correctly. You can recycle your EV batteries through your car company since some companies partner with recycling agencies to reduce environmental impact.

Are all EV batteries 100% recyclable?

Not all EV batteries are 100% recyclable. However, most don’t end up in landfills and undergo safe recycling, adding to more renewable energy resources.

What are the benefits of recycling electric vehicle batteries?

Here are some amazing benefits of recycling EV batteries:

  • Cut waste disposal and reduce environmental impacts.
  • You can reduce the negative impact of harmful chemicals on the environment.
  • Recycling electric vehicle batteries reduces harmful emissions contributing to environmental hazards.
  • It also helps create new jobs in the energy conservation and manufacturing industry.
  • Recycling electric vehicle batteries also creates awareness among EV users about sustaining resources for the future.

What percent of EV batteries are recyclable?

According to a survey by Princeton University, only 5% of disposed batteries are recyclable.

Future of EV battery recycling

Here are some of the possible impacts of EV battery recycling in the future:

Increase in demand– In a few more years, EV batteries will face a boom in demand, which may also lead to more recycling.

Introduction of new technology– With EV battery recycling, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy will popularize. As a result, there will also be many new employment opportunities.

Collaborations and initiatives in reducing waste- Since not all-electric vehicle batteries are recyclable, increased hazardous waste is a threat. However, this may lead to more social collaborations and initiatives to reduce battery wastage and conserve resources for the future.

Second-hand battery usage- In the future, there will be an increase in the use of second-hand batteries. Recycling centers may repurpose these batteries with less power which renewable energy systems repurpose.

While electric vehicle batteries are recyclable, they have a set of concerns that don’t have a proper solution. Also, this recycling may have technical, financial, and health constraints. However, with recyclable EV batteries, users also benefit from sufficient energy backup and can avoid concerns of a sudden power drain.
