Planning to catch a game at the Cleveland Browns stadium this season? If you are not yet a Dawg Pound regular, here’s all you need to know about gameday FirstEnergy Stadium – tickets, gates, road closures, and parking garages nearby. But first, here’s a quick recap of the Browns’ story for the new fans.

Cleveland Browns’ football journey began in 1944 as a charter member of AAFC (All-America Football Conference). Named after their first coach – Paul Brown, who co-founded the franchise with Arthur B. McBride, the Browns began playing in 1946 and celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2021

1946 – 1995

Success came early for the Cleveland Browns – the team put up an overall 47-4-3 record and won all four AAFC championships. They kept the momentum going with a championship title in their inaugural NFL season (1950) and repeated the feat in 1954, 1955, and 1964. In the next 30 years, the Browns made it to the playoffs 14 times.

1995 marks the beginning of the Cleveland Browns’ decline, triggered by the former owner Art Modell’s plans to relocate the team to Baltimore. The ensuing protest and legal threat from the city of Cleveland, backed by Browns fans, forced Modell to give up the team’s heritage, logo, name, and training facility. However, he was allowed to transfer his personnel to the new franchise.

1999 – Present

Following Art Modell’s exit with his players and staff, Cleveland Browns were suspended for three NFL seasons. Though the franchise retained its membership, an expansion draft was used to re-stock the roster before resuming play in 1999. The Browns have struggled to make a mark since – the 2010s were especially unsuccessful

The Cleveland Browns’ frequent head coaches and quarterback changes are often blamed for their poor record. They have only had three winning seasons since the reshuffle – 2002, 2007, and 2020. In addition, between 2003 and 2019, the team suffered a 17-year playoff drought

In the 2020 season, the Browns secured a playoff win against the Steelers in the Wild Card Round. However, they lost the Divisional playoffs to the Kansas City Chiefs the next week. The 8-9 finish in 2021 dashed the team’s hope for improvement and left them trailing with third place in the division.

Rivals and Fans

The Turnpike Rivalry between Cleveland Browns and Pittsburg Steelers is the oldest in AFC. It was initially fueled by the Saturday Night games between the two teams between 1946 – 1970. With Steelers dominating the rivalry since the 70s, they remain the Browns’ top rivals.

Browns’ other AFC opponents – Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens – are also major rivals. The Battle of Ohio between the Bengals and Browns has been more competitive since the latter’s return to NFL in 1999. Meanwhile, matchups with the Ravens are more bitter for the Cleveland team due to the Browns’ relocation and eventual Super Bowl win for Baltimore in 2000.

Though the Browns are yet to better their record against the top three rivals, the fans are far from giving up on their team.  Cleveland Browns fans are at their best in the Dawg Pound – the supporters’ section on the east end of their home stadium.

Browns Backers Worldwide (BBW) is the franchise’s most prominent supporters’ organization. The BBW has over 300K members, with clubs in every major US city and several military bases worldwide. In addition, there is a sizable number of Cleveland Brown fans in Egypt, Australia, Japan, and Sri Lanka.

Cleveland Browns Logo

Browns are the only team in the NFL with helmets that do not feature a logo. Instead, the logo-less helmet itself serves as the franchise’s primary trademark. The burnt orange helmets have a seal brown top stripe, divided by a white stripe.

The Cleveland Browns have tried several logos for past promotions. Such as the “CB” logo or the brown B on a white football. The brown and orange dog mascot is a nod to the Dawg Pound. The team also uses commemorative logos for occasions like the 75th-Anniversary in 2021. Browns’ fans have chosen the Brownie Elf logo for the FirstEnergy Stadium midfield during the 2022 season.

Cleveland Browns Schedule for 2022 Season

2022 marks the Cleveland Browns’ 70th NFL season and third under head coach Kevin Stefanski. In his first two seasons with the franchise, Stefanski led the team to 20 wins.

The Browns kicked off the regular season with a 26-24 win against the Carolina Panthers, followed by a disappointing 30-31 loss at home to the New York Jets in Week 2. The next game is also at FirstEnergy Stadium – top rivals Pittsburgh Steelers are the Week 3 visitors. In addition, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, and Cincinnati Bengals are visiting the Browns stadium in October.

FirstEnergy Stadium has a capacity of 67,431 for Cleveland Browns football games, including 143 suites. Gameday passes are almost entirely sold online. The NFL strongly recommends official mobile ticketing for verified resale passes. You cannot enter the stadium using a pass in any form other than the valid digital format.

Cleveland Browns Stadium

The FirstEnergy Stadium, formerly Cleveland Browns Stadium, opened on September 12, 1999. However, the Browns have played at the same site since their inception in 1946. The Cleveland Municipal Stadium occupied the downtown location from 1931 to 1996. It was demolished to build the new stadium; the Cleveland Browns played their last season at the old stadium in 1995.

Cleveland Browns Stadium before name change to FirstEnergy Stadium

Browns’ current stadium is a multi-purpose venue but primarily serves as the team’s home field. The franchise’s lack of success since 1999 earned it the moniker Factory of Sadness. However, comedian Mike Polk, who coined the name, has “closed the factory” as of 2021. Meanwhile, the stadium naming rights were sold only in 2013. Initially, the Browns and Cleveland decided to sell the rights to name only the four entrance gates.

How to Reach FirstEnergy Stadium

Cleveland Browns’ FirstEnergy Stadium is in the downtown North Coast Harbor, next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes Science Center. It is on Lake Erie’s banks and easily accessible via the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway. The street address for the stadium is 100 Alfred Lerner Way. You can use the map below to find your route to the Browns game:

For drop-off and pick-up, follow the designated route to avoid gameday traffic restrictions. Take East 55th Street to North Marginal Road and continue towards the stadium, driving parallel to the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway. Then, cross E 9th Street to Erieside Avenue and turn right into Key Plaza. Road closures for Cleveland Browns games begin at least two hours before kick-off and are put in place up to an hour after the game ends.

If you are using public transit, note that the West 3rd Street station serving the stadium is suspended during the 2022 season. For updates and other options, check out the Cleveland RTA.
