Ford Mustang GT500: How fast can it go?

By now, you’ve probably seen many driving reviews of the Ford Mustang GT500. Your social media feeds would be filled with such reviews. We were surprised by how well-rounded this 760-horsepower (557-kilowatt) muscle machine is.

We must remember that Ford says the Shelby can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. It goes through the quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds at 132 mph. When going faster, the Ford Mustang GT500 gets ahead of both the ZL1 and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye.

Why is a Ford Mustang GT500, which has almost 300 more horsepower, not as fast as a new Corvette? Read on to know more!

Ford Mustang GT500: Speed Specifications

After the quarter-mile, the GT500 showed off its power by reaching 150 mph in 15.1 seconds. That’s 2.8 seconds faster than the Challenger and 3.2 seconds faster than the ZL1.

Even though Ford Mustang GT500 has almost 300 more horsepower than the Corvette, it can’t beat the Corvette’s 2.8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. This is exactly why Chevy switched to a mid-engine layout.

A weight bias toward the back of the Corvette lets it have more traction and put more power down from a stop. The better power-to-weight ratio of the GT500 is shown in the quarter-mile trap speed, where the GT500 goes ten mph faster than the Corvette (132 mph vs. 122 mph).

Ford Mustang GT500: How fast is it?

That’s a little faster than the 2014 Shelby GT500 Mustang, which had 662 horsepower (494 kW). Its official time was 3.6 seconds, but we can’t help but notice that the new car only beats it by two-tenths, even though it has almost 100 more horsepower. Ford’s decision to go public with a slightly faster time seems a bit convenient, especially since the new Shelby GT500 has a slower top speed than the old one.

It might seem like we’re making fun of Ford for making a car that doesn’t necessarily do better than a model from five years ago, but we’re saying the exact opposite.

Even a lot of horsepower and the best street tires can’t get past the invisible traction wall at some point. You can move the engine to the back at that point, as Chevy did with the Corvette. Or you can make a very soft suspension, like the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, so that more weight can be moved.

The quarter-mile time is the real eye-opener here. It is a full second faster than the old Shelby. You’ll get 100 more horsepower and a DCT that lets you change gears quickly.

Way.com’s Impressions

As for top speed, the old GT500 could go up to 200 mph. But it didn’t have the great aero package that the new one does. You could only reach 200 mph on a long, closed straight. The new GT500’s extra downforce can be felt on a basic open track event. It can also be felt when driving safely through a canyon.

The new GT500 is one of the few that has the right mix of raw power, handling, and surprising day-to-day usability. That is, for cars that start at less than $100,000.
