What could be better to do this fall season than exploring America’s very own backyard? With state borders and national parks opening up post the pandemic and starting to relax their rulesdomestic travel seems to be the go-to for travel buffs all over the country. We’ve rounded up the best fall travel destinations to head to this year – so pack those bags and get ready to head on out!

Glacier National Park, Montana 

The perfect fall getaway – visiting Glacier National Park during fall, means thinner crowds and more chances of catching wildlife in, well, the wild! Get up close and personal with nature at picturesque campsites that won’t be filled with tourists. What’s more, there’s a lot more wildlife activity in the area, with the fauna preparing for the long winter haul that’s soon to arrive. If you happen to be driving into the park (which we highly recommend), you’ll be happy to note that there’s hardly any traffic on the roads going in and out. With this reduced congestion of vehicles, being able to experience the vastness of the park in a shorter span of time is a breeze.  

Poconos Mountains, Pennsylvania  

The Poconos, a region known for its gorgeous lakes, mountain tops, and vista-inducing valleys, is located in scenic northeastern Pennsylvania. Asheville, North Carolina

The fall season sees the foliage in the area attain its peak of beauty and is the ideal time to visit during the year. 

Big Sur, California 

A rugged region just off of California’s Central Coast, Big Sur stretches between the towns of San Simeón and Carmel, with the Santa Lucia mountains flanking its east side. Big Sur is best explored by the famous two-lane road called State Route 1 – immortalized in road-trip movies for its vista-like views of the Pacific Ocean, rough cliffs, and winding curves. The area, although limited in size, provides visitors with a wide variety of hiking trails, state parks, campsites, and beaches to choose from that are sure to satisfy outdoor leisure seekersAn added bonus is the fact that the months of September and October see crowds that are significantly lower when compared to summertime. Travelers are advised to tune in to local weather reports to confirm any fire hazards in the area before heading out to Big Sur.

Charleston, South Carolina 

historical city founded in 1670, Charleston is a town located on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast. The city is steeped in history and features classic-style paved roads and many pre-Civil War houses and buildings. Visitors can book a horse-drawn carriage ride through the old part of town for nostalgic experience like none other – you‘re guaranteed to be instantly transported into the past. The Fort Sumter, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, the City Market, and Waterfront Park are some of the other sought-after attractions in the area. October is a great time to visit Charleston because although it might get a little crowded, it has the perfect weather to take in all the history-laden sights and sounds of the city.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado 

A vast protected area located in the state of Colorado, the Rocky Mountain National Park surrounds the Continental Divide with many spectacular mountains, thick forests, and plenty of alpine scenery. The park includes picturesque mountain biking trails, including Trail Ridge Road and Old River Road. You’ll also get access to endless hiking opportunities thanks to the vast network of trails that span various distances and will put your skills to the test. You’re likely to experience some snow if you’re visiting in October but get there early in the month. The Trail Ridge Road remains open – the perfect time to take in the views of the wild elk that roam the mountains.
