Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, two engineers from Silicon Valley, started Tesla in 2003. Their perception of EVs being better and more fun to ride fueled their dream to make one. In 1990, Tarpenning met Eberhard, who was an engineer at Wyse Technology at the time, and they became good friends. They shared a love for starting businesses. And eventually, they started NuvoMedia, which made the Rocket eBook in 1998.  

Soon after, Eberhard got very interested in cars. He thought about getting into the electric car business after he invested in a small electric car company called AC Propulsion. In 2001, the duo approached Elon Musk after being fascinated by his talk at Stanford University for the Mars Society. Musk already had a number of successful start-ups under his belt at the time.

In 2003, Tesla became a company with the goal of making an electric car that was efficient, elegant, and eco-friendly. Ian Wright and JB Straubel were the co-founders. Straubel was the company’s chief technology officer (CTO) until 2019, and Wright left in 2004.  

In 2004, the co-founders of the company started investing with venture capital firms. In 2004, Elon Musk joined Tesla after putting $6.3 million into the company during a Series A round of investment. Musk was put in charge of the company’s board of directors.
