Heat Management: The engine is one part of the car where most of the heat is generated. Even though the thermostat and coolant are the major players in the heat management game, it starts with the engine oil. It draws heat from each moving component and prevents the engine from overheating. 

In addition, it prevents parts from rusting and sludge formation and stays effective even under extreme temperatures, which are much higher than the optimal value. Car engine oil has all these properties thanks to a few chemical compounds called additives. 

How much oil does my car need? 

The amount of oil that goes into your car engine depends on a few factors. Among those, the primary concern is how big your car engine is. Generally, the bigger the engine is, the more fuel and air it needs to power the car forward. Similarly, the size of the car is directly proportional to the amount of engine oil, i.e., the bigger the engine, the more oil is required.

Let’s divide cars into small and large engine cars depending on the engine size. The ideal oil levels of each of these are given below.¬†

Small engine cars 

  • Single-cylinder engine needs between 3.17 to 3.698 quarts of oil.¬†
  • Two-cylinder engine requires between 3.69 and 4.22 quarts.¬†
  • Three-cylinder engine needs between 3.69 and 4.22 quarts.¬†

Large engine cars 

  • Four-cylinder engine requires between 3.69 and 4.75 quarts.¬†
  • Six-cylinder engines must have between 4.75 and 5.81 quarts.¬†
  • Eight-cylinder engine needs between 5.81 and 7.92 quarts.¬†

The owner’s manual is the best place to find your car’s optimal oil level. Most car manufacturers specify the ideal oil levels and how often you need to change them in the owner’s manuals. What are different types of engine oil for my car? 

Engine oil must have a few properties to be used in each car. One of those is viscosity, which specifies how well the oil flows at a specific temperature. Based on this, there are two classifications. 


Thin OilРLower viscosity, i.e., flows more easily at lower temperatures. This makes it the best choice for use during cold weather. 

Thick OilРHigh viscosity, i.e., maintains oil pressure at high temperatures, and it has the property to prevent thinning when the engine is at high temperatures. 


Viscosity is denoted using ‘XW-XX .”W’ stands for winter. There will be two numbers, one before the ‘W’ and one after. The number before the ‘W’ represents the oil’s viscosity at 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the number after ‘W’ shows viscosity at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.¬†

Synthetic and Conventional Oil 

Synthetic oil is winning this battle. It has additives that make sure the formation of deposits is minimum. The fresh engine oil will be clear and golden, while the oil that has been used will be black and will have deposits. At the same time, conventional oil has more chance of getting frothy and turning black faster than synthetic oil. Again, it is better to consult with a technician before deciding between synthetic and conventional oil.

The amount of car engine oil will determine how smoothly the car runs over a period of time. For some cars, even if the oil level is one quart low, it might run for a short distance. But the overheating of the engine can lead to the car breaking down and leading to major repairs. Similarly, too much engine oil can also lead to issues.
