What does the car carburetor do?

The carburetor helps adjust the amount of fuel and air mixture that enters the engine in a car. The parts in the carburetor deliver the proper air and fuel mix to make the car more fuel-efficient.

What are the signs of a bad car carburetor?

Here are some of the signs and symptoms that your car exhibits when the carburetor malfunctions:

When the engine is running lean

A car’s engine is said to be running lean when there’s an imbalance in the ratio of air and fuel. When the fuel ratio decreases or the ratio of the air increases, your vehicle will make a popping and sneezing sound. This could be happening because of a blocked carburetor.

When the car does not start

As we mentioned earlier, a clogged carburetor can prevent your vehicle from starting. That’s why if your car does not start, then most probably it could be because of a blocked carburetor. Clear off the dirt, dust, grime, and grease, and try starting the vehicle again.

The car’s engine is running rich

Yes, you guessed it right! “running rich” is the opposite of running lean. In this situation, the fuel ratio is more, and the air is deficient. The classic sign of an engine running rich is the black smoke coming out of your vehicle’s exhaust.

Flooded engine

The excess dirt in the fuel bowl can block the needle valve and prevent it closing. This means the fuel would then overflow into the carburetor and flood it.

Things you’ll need:

  • Safety gloves and goggles
  • Napkins, paper towels, rags, or cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Microfiber towels
  • Brush

Step 1

Wear safety gloves and goggles before you begin the process. Now switch off the engine and locate the air filter and its. Once you’ve located it, remove it to access the carburetor. Next, remove the surrounding hoses and linkages.

Step 2

Use a vacuum cleaner to clear off the dirt, debris, and dust accumulated on the surface.

Step 3

Next, spread the paper towels or old cloth around the carburetor to protect the surfaces and catch any run-offs.

Step 4

Spray the cleaner into the carburetor. Allow the cleaner to stay for a few minutes to loosen the dirt. Next, using microfiber towels and cleaning solution, wipe away the dirt and grime. To reach all the spots, use a brush.

Step 5

It’s time to dry the carburetor. Use a dry towel and remove the moisture and water in it. Allow it to dry for 2-3 hours before placing it back.

Step 6

After the drying process, place it back inside the housing, connect all the components, and start the engine to check the outcome. If the engine starts and runs without any trouble, you’ve completed the process.
