How to Open a Tesla Door: Navigate with Ease

Tesla cars have a reputation for being a standout as they are different from others. Every action, even as simple as opening its door, needs a different approach. And here’s all about how to open a Tesla door.  

How to Open a Tesla Door from Inside?

Model S 

To open the Model S door electronically, simply press the button on the top of the interior door handle. If you want to exit the vehicle, simply push the door open and leave as usual. 

To manually open the front door of Model S when there is no power, simply pull up the manual door release. It is on the door, right in front of the window switches. 

Pull back the edge of the carpet under the rear seat to manually open the rear door of Model S. Then locate the mechanical release cable. And pull the mechanical release cable toward the center of the vehicle. 

Model 3 and Model Y  

To open the doors of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y from the inside, simply press the button at the top of the interior door handle. That will make the front or rear door pop open. To exit, simply push the door open and leave as usual. 

To manually open the front door of a Model 3 and Model Y from the inside, locate the manual door release on the door. It is located right in front of the window switches. Simply pull the manual door release to open the door. You cannot manually open the rear doors of Model 3 and Model Y. 

Model X 

To open the door of Model X, simply press the button on the interior door handle near the top. Then, push the door open as you would with any regular car. You can automatically tap the brake pedal to close the door if you are in a parked car and sitting in the driver’s seat. 

The Model X doesn’t have regular back passenger doors. Instead, it has falcon wing doors that open vertically. To access the doors from inside, you can press the switch on the driver’s side door pillar or use the door icon on the touchscreen. To access the door icon on the touchscreen, go to Controls, then Locks, and select the door option.

How to Open a Tesla Door from Outside?

Model S 

When approaching a Tesla, you’ll notice it doesn’t have a typical door handle. Instead, the exterior appears sleek, and you can see the outline of where the door handle is located. To extend it, simply press down on the handle, and it will extend automatically. Place your hand inside and pull it open just like you would with a regular car door. 

To automatically extend the door handles when you approach with the phone key or fob, simply use the touchscreen. To access the auto-present handles feature, go to Controls, select Locks, and finally, choose Auto-Present Handles. If you don’t open the door within 1 minute, the handle will retract. To extend it, simply press on it again. 

Model 3 and Model Y 

To open the door of Model 3 and Model Y from the outside, use your thumb to push down the wider part of the door handle. To open the exterior door, apply gentle pressure to the handle, and it will move towards you. Pull on the handle like a regular car door to open the door. 

Model X 

To open the door, gently apply pressure to the exterior door handle. Press the door handle or double-press the falcon wing door button on the key fob (located on the far left). To open it, simply insert your hand and pull it open like a regular car door. 

How to Open a Tesla Door with a Card?

If the owner gave you a key card, hold it up to the pillar on the driver’s side of the door. This action should successfully lock and unlock the car. Then you can proceed to open the Tesla door. 

How to Open a Tesla Door with the App?

To unlock your Tesla door using the mobile app, open the app on your phone. Tap on the touch controls and then Unlock. And then, click on the “Yes” button in the confirmation popup window. This should unlock your Tesla door. Later you can open the door depending on the model. 

How to Open a Tesla Door from the Screen?

You can use the touchscreen popup to open and close doors while inside. It is possible when the vehicle is in Park or when you do it by selecting Controls > Locks. 

How to Open a Tesla Door in Winter?

What to do if your Tesla door handle is frozen? Now you might think of unconventional ways, like pouring hot water or using your hairdryer or garden hose to heat it. These tricks work but can damage your Tesla in the long run. According to the Tesla Manual book, you can use the rocking or fist bump method to open your frozen Tesla doors.  

Rocking Method 

To open the black door handle, simply press the front part of the handle firmly and move it back and forth. The rocking method is capable of helping you to gain access to your car. After opening the door, rock the handle back and forth a few times to remove any extra ice build-up. 

Fist Bump Method 

To open the silver Tesla door, locate the backmost part of the door handle and apply pressure. Apply pressure to it as if you were attempting to open it in the usual manner. Then simply make circular motions around the perimeter of the door handle. The fist bump method works perfectly for silver doors. 

Use the bottom of your fist to bump the handle gently multiple times. While pressing it, continue until the ice is broken and you have gained access. Then continue to push the handle repeatedly while moving towards the back of the wider section of the door handle. To make the bumps stronger, repeat these steps until it opens. After you’ve turned the door handle, try opening and closing it a few times to get rid of any extra ice. 

Unlatch the Door on the App

Tesla has developed an in-app feature to assist owners who deal with frozen doors. The “Unlatch Door” feature lets Tesla owners easily open their frozen doors by pressing a button on the Tesla phone app.
