How to paint the hood of a car – A step-by-step guide

Step 1 – Clean your car’s hood

Using a car wash solution and wash mitt, start cleaning your hood. First, pre-wash the hood with water. Next, mix the car wash solution with water and use it on the hood. Now, rub the area to clear off the dirt and grime using a wash mitt.

Some people use household cleaning products like dish soaps to clean their cars. We recommend avoiding this since it can damage your car’s paint and finish.

Step 2 – Dry the spot

It’s a bad idea to park the wet car directly under the sunlight to dry it. By doing so, you can cause water spots on the car. Instead, use microfiber towels to absorb all the water and then allow it to dry under the sun.

Step 3 – Use sandpaper

Use low grit sandpaper (40 to 60 grit) and any rust spots you notice. Rub the sandpaper back and forth till the hood is smooth. Now remove the rusting dust with a rag and degreaser and let it dry.

Step 4 – Apply primer to the hood

Before you start applying the primer on the hood, cover the car’s rest with plastic sheets and tapes. You can buy these items from your nearest auto parts shop. Once you’ve covered the rest of the car, start applying primer.

Begin from the windshield and work your way till the bumper. Slowly apply the primer in a straight line towards the other end. Now start from the bumper and reach the windshield. Repeat the process till you cover the entire hood.

Step 5 – Add more layers

Add 3 to 4 layers of primer using the same method as mentioned above. Wait up to five minutes before you apply a new layer. Let the primer dry before applying the paint. Cover the hood with a drop cloth to protect it.

Step 6 – Apply paint

Using a paint can or gun, apply the paint on the hood. Follow the same techniques you used for the primer. Begin painting from one end of the hood and in a straight line. While painting, make sure you are not moving too fast. That’s because my moving too fast, you will end up with thin, faded streaks.

Step 7 – Apply more coats

Apply more coats to make the hood look good. Read the instructions on the product to know about the waiting time between each coat. After adding two to three coats, your hood should look perfect. Let it dry before you take it out for a ride.
