Try these getaways ideas for MLK Day Weekend 2024:

Ski Town Weekend Getaway

Dreaming of powdered peaks and snow sports? It’s time for your annual ski vacation! The ski towns are ready for you to have fun shredding the slopes or making memories with your family. Here are some of the top ski towns to plan your weekend getaway at:

Salt Lake City, Utah: Surrounded by the Wasatch Range peaks, at the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the ski slopes here are known for the super-light powder. Almost half of the terrain is beginner and intermediate friendly. You can rent a room at one of the cozy lodges in the valley, with slop-side views for a scenic stay.

Aspen, Colorado: Four resorts for a single lift ticket is not at all a bad deal. Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, and Snowmass offer a diverse mix of terrain. Upskill skiing is free at all four mountains; add world-class shopping and dining to the mix, and you have the perfect ski holiday to start 2023.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming: An expert skiers’ favorite, this Wyoming ski town recently added an intermediate terrain on the craggy mountainside. It also has a full-service lodge and ski school. You could also explore the backcountry terrain with a guide or go on a sleigh-ride tour at the National Elk Refuge.

MLK Weekend Getaway at a National Park

The National Park Services maintains over 400 properties across the country – you are most likely to live just a short drive away from at least one national park. A long weekend getaway amid wide-open spaces is just what you need to unwind after the festive season. Here are some of the top national parks you can drive to for a weekend getaway from the city:

Olympic National Park, Washington: Miles of Pacific coastline, hiking trails cutting across rainforests, the Olympic mountain peaks, and thousand-year rich human history – you’ll never run out of things to explore in this national park spread across a million acres. The Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Ruby Beach, Hall of Moses, and Sol Duc falls are just a few of the must-visit places in Olympic National Park.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah: Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunset Point, and Sunrise Point are the four main viewpoints. The Bryce Amphitheatre, with its natural rock spires called ‘hoodoos,’ is a must-see. Ranger programs like daily geology talks, rim walk, or moon hikes are also impressive. During winter, campgrounds and hotel rooms are available for accommodation in the park.

Biscayne National Park, Florida: If you are looking for a warmer weekend getaway, head to Florida. The Biscayne National Park is just off downtown Miami, but the aquamarine waters, islands, and coral reefs are a world apart. Outdoor activities are plenty here – go boating, snorkeling, camping, fishing, or just relax by the bay.
