After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, one of the world’s most iconic festivals is back this fall. Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to travel from the U.S. to Germany for Oktoberfest 2022.

Will Oktoberfest 2022 happen?

Oktoberfest Munich

Munich local officials declared Friday that Oktoberfest will return in 2022. That’s what an announcement on the event’s official website says. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter said he approved the celebration this year after careful consideration of both the pandemic situation and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“Ultimately, it’s up to everyone to decide for themselves whether and how much they want to celebrate,” Reiter said. He directed city and event authorities to “start the staging” of the celebration “without limits and restrictions.”

The announcement indicates that the event will be held for the 187th time this year. As you know, it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

What is Oktoberfest?

Over the course of many years, Oktoberfest has been a wildly popular celebration among guests who travel from inside Europe. It is, in fact, an event that is on the bucket list of many people from all over the world. But unfortunately, fans have been missing out on everything that Oktoberfest has to offer. This includes its beer (of course) and huge iconic tents to its food, parades, and carnival rides.

When is Oktoberfest 2022?

The Oktoberfest in Munich will begin on Saturday, September 17, and end on Monday, October 3 this year.

What to expect during Oktoberfest this year

The “first tapping” of the beer is a ceremonial event that takes place on September 17th. This marks the official beginning of the 2022 gathering. After this, there will be a horse-drawn carriage parade with one thousand participants. They include politicians, brewers, members of participants’ families, and others attending the event.

The director of Oktoberfest stated that the choice to proceed with the festival this year is beneficial for both people and the economy. The director anticipates a “mega” event to take place this fall. That’s because of the pent-up demand and the success the city had with previous spring celebrations.

Getting to Oktoberfest 2022

We found some decent options for folks interested in traveling to Germany for Oktoberfest 2022. So before packing your bags and making the trip this Germany this autumn, you’ll need to plan.

Recent price trends suggest that fall may be a less expensive time to travel than summer. This is especially true if you book your trip as soon as possible. These include choices for travelers who hope to pay cash for their ticket or redeem points that they have accumulated throughout the course of their trip.

Flight options to Munich

We looked at flight options from the New York area to Munich using Google Flights for the two weeks that Oktoberfest is happening.

In late September and early October, we found a terrific fare on SAS for $555. SAS is a Scandinavian airline that is a member of Star Alliance. The itinerary includes a brief layover in Oslo, Norway, on the way to Munich International Airport (MUC), and it begins at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) (MUC).

Flights from New York to Munich

You’ll have to spend more time in Copenhagen on the layover there on the aircraft back. You arrive just before 8 o’clock in the evening, but you have to leave for Newark in the middle of the following day. This is not a particularly convenient situation. On the other hand, it might be sufficient for you to stop for supper and obtain a brief impression of the city before returning to the United States.

Flight schedule

In the meantime, fares did appear to be higher on U.S. carriers. The cheapest round-trip ticket that United had to offer for Oktoberfest that we could locate was $958 on Delta. We strongly recommend that you cash in on your miles to reduce ticket costs.

In which Munich neighborhood is Oktoberfest held?

Oktoberfest Munich

Munich is split into 25 boroughs; however, all of the tourist attractions are concentrated in the 7-8 boroughs near the center. Fortunately, Oktoberfest is held in one of these!

Oktoberfest is officially held in Theresienwiese, which is part of the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt municipality.

Where to stay for Oktoberfest

Choosing where to stay in Munich at Oktoberfest is likely to be one of the most difficult (and expensive) decisions you’ll have to make while arranging your ultimate booze-fest. With hundreds of hotels to select from, it might be difficult to choose the ideal one without blowing your budget.

Munich hotels around Oktoberfest book months, even a year in advance, so rates are outrageous, especially for high-quality hotels.

The biggest benefit of staying nearby is that you can stroll home after a night of drinking. Given how well-connected the Theresienwiese is to public transit, staying farther away (but still on the right U-Bahn lines) is definitely smarter, cheaper, and quieter.

The best spot to stay in Munich during Oktoberfest is near a U3, U4, U5, or U6 station. Here are some of the best options.
