What is Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year – as it is commonly known in the US – marks the first new moon of the Lunisolar Calendar. It’s a major festival celebrated in China and across many Asian countries like Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. The Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival in China, has an underlying theme of a new beginning attracting good fortune, health, and happiness. It is also a time to visit friends and family – the Reunion Dinner on Lunar New Year eve is an integral part of traditional celebrations. In China, the 15-day celebrations end with the breathtaking Lantern Festival.

Each Lunar Year is assigned a Zodiac animal. It’s common to use Lunar New year decorations based on the Zodiac animal of the year. Diamond-shaped red paper squares with the upside-down Chinese character ‘Fu’ are also hung as festive décor to show that ‘good luck is arriving.’

Firecrackers also play a significant role in the festivities to ward off an ancient monster called Nian. Confetti cannons often replace firecrackers on US streets and Chinatowns. Money is red pockets called lì  in Vietnamese or hóngbāo in Mandarin, is another exciting part of Lunar New Year Celebrations – it’s often a gift from elders to children.
