The atmosphere at The Dirty Drummer is classic. They’ve got wooden walls, a bar top, amber glass lamps, and a jukebox loaded with country and classic rock music. In addition, there is a hot grill located directly behind the bar. Miller Light is the house beer, but in addition to that, there are delicious cocktails, 10 taps, and an excellent margarita made in-house.

Avanti, 2728 East Thomas Road

The ambiance at Avanti, which was established by Benito Mellino of Sorrento and Angelo Livi, a restaurateur from Tuscany, is reminiscent of the Italian restaurant featured in the film Moonstruck. What really grabs people’s attention is the interior design, which is predominantly black and white with chrome accents, zebra stripes, and dark red walls.

The restaurant is called Avanti because it literally translates to “forward’ and first opened its doors in 1974. Since then, they’ve been serving pasta and sauces, entrees such as linguine carbonara, a tasty lasagna, and an abundance of wine.

Walter Station Brewery, 4056 East Washington Street

Weary travelers looking for food and possibly a beer will find Walter Station Brewery to be a convenient option for both. Pizza selections include bbq chicken, Super Greeky, and basic pepperoni. They also serve sandwiches and nachos. Where’s the beer? Simply go to the fire station-turned-brewery to check what’s on tap.

Tratto 1505, East Van Buren Street

Tratto, an Italian restaurant in Phoenix founded by James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Bianco, made the New York Times Food Desk’s list of 50 favorite restaurants in America.  Tratto opened in 2016. Following the departure of chef Cassie Shortino earlier this year, head chef Zion Yaegashi Culley took over the kitchen.

Its kitchen still demonstrates that Arizona wheat produces excellent pasta as well as dough and bread. It also shows that Italian cuisine can be influenced by seasonal, regional ingredients, even in a desert city where getting to your car frequently seems like passing through a pizza oven.
