Houston, Texas, is home to the world’s largest livestock exhibition and rodeo. The annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has been around since 1932, but its history goes another 10 years back. Better known as Rodeo Houston, HLSR is also one of the richest rodeo events, with a $2.17 million payout! The top 280 professional cowboys compete in the SuperShootout. Champions of each individual event earn $50K after the playoffs. Top 10 North American rodeo champions are also invited to compete in team events. On the last night of the rodeo, winners from the previous days compete for the grand champion title.
What are the events at Houston Rodeo?
Apart from the rodeo championship, you can witness livestock competitions and auctions, wine and barbecue contests, a carnival, and even big-name concerts at the end of each day at Rodeo Houston.
The Downtown Rodeo Roundup held near Houston City Hall kicks off the long line of Rodeo Houston events every year. On Go Texan Day, celebrated on Friday before the rodeo officially begins, Houston residents dress up in western styles. Traditional trail rides from across Texas also end in Houston before the rodeo begins. You can also look forward to the Downtown Rodeo parade, the 5K and 10K Rodeo Run, and World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest that precede the main events.
When is the Houston Rodeo concert held?
Concerts are held every evening after the rodeo, consecutively for 20 days. Some of the biggest names in music have performed at the NRG Stadium over the years. Country music singers often dominate the lineup, but pop and rock stars also perform live at Houston Rodeo.
Notable names from the past include Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, John Legend, Bon Jovi, Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, blink-182, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande, John Legend, Jonas Brothers, and Taylor Swift, among others.
Upcoming artists also get a chance to perform at the event’s temporary dance hall, The Hideout. Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, and several other successful musicians have played here in the early days of their careers. Each evening, around 2k – 3k visitors fill into the Hideout set inside a large tent on the west side of NRG Arena. Admission is only for 21 years of age or above.
