About PDX Airport code and the airport history
Portland International Airport, often referred to by its airport code PDX, is a civil and military airport. In 1936, the Portland City Council purchased the current PDX site. It was named Portland- Columbia Airport to differentiate it from Swan Island Airport, Portland’s first airport.
In 1959, a brand-new terminal opened, and by the 1980s, a massive renovation of the terminal building had begun to bring up PDX to meet the needs of the future. Starting in March 2020, a 5-year expansion project has begun to add open space in the pre-security area and for 150 feet of expansion towards the west.
Most of Oregon’s air traffic (over 90% of passengers and 95% of cargo) originates from Portland International Airport. Portland International Airport (PDX) provides international flights to Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Korea, Iceland, and the United Kingdom and direct flights to most major airports in the United States.
Portland Airport Terminal
PDX Airport has one main terminal and four concourses. Security checkpoints at either end of the terminal provide access to Concourses B/C and D/E. Concourses D and E are on the northern side of the terminal, while concourses B and C are on the southern side. The terminal has three levels: baggage claim, ticketing, and mezzanine.
Ground Transportation
Ground transportation facilities can be found outside of baggage claim. The rental car facility and parking (short-term, long-term, economy, and valet parking) garage are just across from the terminal building. The TriMet MAX Light Rail station, which provides service to downtown Portland, is located at the south end of the ticketing lobby. Ground transportation also includes ride shares, shuttles, buses, limos, town cars, taxis, and bicycles.
