Winter is almost here. Now is the time to prep your vehicle and get it winter-ready. Here are our top tips to winterize your car – use these tips to protect your vehicle and create a safe driving experience.

Start using winter tires/snow tires

In Winter, with the road being slippery because of constant rain and snow, it’s best to switch to winter tires. If you live in an area that experiences great snow and rain, switching to winter tires is a no-brainer and a safe choice. Normal tires will lose the ability to grip the road, and the drop in temperature can harden the rubber compounds in non-winter tires. On the other hand, winter tires can withstand cold temperatures and provide better traction in snow, ice, and slush. Also, constantly check your tire pressure to be on the safer side.

Install winter wipers

During Winter, it’s advisable to install winter wipers to tackle the heavy snow and rain. The winter wiper blades have a thick rubber layer to clear the snow off the windshield effectively. Most winter car accidents happen due to poor visibility. Therefore by installing winter wipers, you can create a safe driving environment.

Check fluid levels

Make sure all the fluid levels in your car are optimal as recommended by the manufacturer. Check the engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and if they’re low, top them up immediately. Also, check the windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze/coolant levels for hassle-free winter driving.

Check your battery

We’re sure you don’t want to be stranded on a cold, snow-filled road because of a dead car battery. Remember, the chances of battery damage are very high when the weather gets cold. If you’ve trouble starting your car, we recommend you get your battery checked or change it immediately. Also, check all the connections and see if they are tight and corrosion-free.

Have a winter safety kit in place

Before you head out for a long road trip in Winter, make sure you have a car emergency kit in place. Your winter safety kit should contain the following items, and these items can help you out of an unpleasant or dangerous situation (remember this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Jumper cables
  • Blanket
  • Ice scraper
  • Food (non-perishable)
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Tire inflator
  • Gloves
  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Tool kit
  • Flashlight
  • Spare tire

Fill your gas tank

Never let your gas tank go completely empty. Always make sure your tank is at least half full all the time. This is because a full tank can reduce condensation and prevent gas line freeze-ups. What’s more, when you’re stranded on a cold, lonely road and run out of options, a full gas tank can keep you warm till help arrives.

Lubricate your doors

During Winter, your doors can get stuck due to the cold weather outside. To prevent his from happening, lubricate your locks and doors. You can use silicone-based lubricants for car doors and stop them from getting stuck.

Visit a car wash regularly

To keep your car in its best condition all the time, visit a car wash near you regularly. Regular car washes can keep your car spotless and protected from snow, rain, and corrosion.
