How to renew a Virginia driver’s license 

Generally, a Virginia license expires eight years after issuance on the holder’s birthday. If you are over 75, you must renew every five years. You can do the renewal in person at any service center up to a year before the expiration date. You can also renew by mail or online if you’re eligible. If you meet the requirements, the Virginia DMV will include instructions in your renewal notice. 

How to renew it online 

DMV will send you an invitation if you are eligible to renew. You can begin by visiting the Virginia DMV renewal page. Drivers can also renew their licenses in person at a DMV mobile office. In-person renewal is the only way if you don’t qualify for mail or online renewal.

  • Get a new photo.

  • You will get a temporary license or receipt. Expect to receive your renewed license via mail in about 15 days.

You will receive a renewal invitation in the mail if you are eligible. Remember that you can only renew by mail every other renewal period. If you need to update your address, height, or weight on your driver’s license, you can do it while renewing by mail. Follow these steps if you’re eligible for mail renewal. 

  • You must check, complete, sign, and date the pre-printed driver’s license renewal application form you received in the mail. 
  • In the enclosed envelope, keep your completed application and renewal fee. 
  • Then mail the application to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 26506, Richmond, Virginia 23260-6506.
