How to renew a Virginia driver’s license 

Generally, a Virginia license expires eight years after issuance on the holder’s birthday. If you are over 75, you must renew every five years. You can do the renewal in person at any service center up to a year before the expiration date. You can also renew by mail or online if you’re eligible. If you meet the requirements, the Virginia DMV will include instructions in your renewal notice. 

How to renew it online 

DMV will send you an invitation if you are eligible to renew. You can begin by visiting the Virginia DMV renewal page. Then you must verify your identity, double-check your information, and pay your fee with a credit or debit card. The following circumstances will disqualify you from renewing the license online.  

  • Your license has expired, and you have failed to provide proof of your lawful presence. 
  • The DMV has suspended or revoked your driving privileges. 
  • You intend to change or correct the name on your driver’s license. 
  • There’s a need to pass the knowledge or road tests. 
  • You must obtain a new photo for your license.  
  • You owe money to the DMV. 

You’ll get a receipt for completing the process if you are eligible for renewal. Keep the receipt in your car until your new license arrives. It should arrive within 15 days.  

How to renew in-person

Anyone in Virginia can renew their driver’s license at a customer service center. If you choose this option, you must pass a vision screening test and have a new driver’s license photo taken. Drivers can also renew their licenses in person at a DMV mobile office. In-person renewal is the only way if you don’t qualify for mail or online renewal.

Steps to follow 

  • Find a Virginia DMV Center. Some centers will require you to schedule an appointment up to 90 days in advance.

  • Attend the knowledge and driving tests if your license has expired over a year. 
  • Get a new photo.  
  • Check your address, signature, and other details are correct. 
  • Then pay the renewal fee. There is an additional $10 fee for upgrading to a REAL-ID. 
  • You will get a temporary license or receipt. Expect to receive your renewed license via mail in about 15 days. 

How to renew it online 

You will receive a renewal invitation in the mail if you are eligible. Remember that you can only renew by mail every other renewal period. If you need to update your address, height, or weight on your driver’s license, you can do it while renewing by mail. Follow these steps if you’re eligible for mail renewal. 

  • You must check, complete, sign, and date the pre-printed driver’s license renewal application form you received in the mail. 
  • In the enclosed envelope, keep your completed application and renewal fee. 
  • Then mail the application to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 26506, Richmond, Virginia 23260-6506.
