Located around three miles southwest of Downtown Fort Lauderdale and 21 miles north of Miami lies the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, commonly referred to as FLL Airport. This public airport belonging to Broward County is one among the three airports serving Miami metropolitan area. The proximity to the cruise line terminals of Port Everglades also makes the airport very popular among travelers. So, this makes Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport a very busy one! What is FLL Airport

Fort Lauderdale Airport had annual passenger traffic of around 30 million before the pandemic. With more than 16 million passengers using its terminals annually in 2020, the airport was the 46th busiest globally. FLL Airport turned out into an intercontinental gateway in the late 1990s, having more than 700 daily flights to around 135 domestic and international destinations. Fort Lauderdale Airport also serves as a base for JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and Allegiant Air. And for Southwest Airlines, the airport serves as the main South Florida Airport. The airport features four terminals (1-4) with 66 gates.

How to get to FLL Airport 

Train, buses, taxis, and rideshare services connect Downtown Fort Lauderdale and Miami well to the airport. Taking a train or bus are the ideal options if you want to have an economic journey to the airport. Though taxi and rideshare services are expensive, it also provides a convenient journey to your destination.  

Getting into a train 

Using the Tri-Rail train service is one of the most convenient ways to reach the airport connecting Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach. The train fare varies depending on the number of zones your pass through. So, a journey from Hollywood International Airport station to Fort Lauderdale will cost between $2.50-6.25. All the trains operate every 20 minutes to an hour. Fort Lauderdale Airport/Tri-Rail Station is the closest station to the airport. 

Using bus services 

Getting into a Broward County Transit bus offers a convenient and economical way to reach FLL Airport. The Route 3 bus operates to/from the airport from the Broward Central Terminal to Aventura Mall in Miami. The buses run every 20-30 minutes. The service time differs depending on the day or time. A single journey to the airport can cost you $2.  

Tri-Rail bus: Tri-Rail bus service offers a free shuttle service for travelers between the station and the airport. The Fort Lauderdale Airport station located at Dania Beach is the closest station to the airport. You can locate the stops at the west end of Terminal 1, between Terminals 2 and 3, and between Terminals 3 and 4.  

Parking at FLL Airport from $3/day

Taxi/Rideshare services 

Taxi services are available 24/7 from the city center. Hiring a taxi service can cost you $25-35 to reach FLL Airport. Traveling from Downtown to the airport takes around 15-20 minutes. However, hiring a taxi from Miami will be more expensive. Usually, a taxi ride from Miami to the airport costs you around $70. 

Hiring an Uber service from Downtown to the airport normally costs you around $20-30. Be ready to pay anything between $28 and $190 if you’re traveling from Miami. Using a Lyft service can cost you between $10 and $45 while traveling from Downtown. From Miami, hiring a Lyft service will cost you between $32-165. The fare depends on the ride type you choose and the time of travel. 

Driving to the airport 

Normally it takes around 15-20 minutes to reach FLL airport if you’re driving from Downtown. From Miami, it takes around 60 minutes to reach the airport. Driving to the airport can be a good option if flying out for a few days or traveling with family. But always be aware that the road from Downtown and Miami to Fort Lauderdale can be congested, especially during peak hours or holidays. So start early if you’re driving to the airport. Also, ensure that you reserve an FLL Airport parking spot if you’re not returning soon. Be mindful that parking at Fort Lauderdale Airport never comes easy!

FLL Airport parking 

Onsite parking at FLL Airport offers around 12,000 parking spaces that are connected with all the terminal complexes. The short-term and long-term FLL Airport parking spots are offered via two main lots – Palm and Hibiscus garages.  

Short-term FLL Airport parking is available at Hibiscus Garage Level 2 and Palm Garage Level 1. Parking in these lots charges you $3 per hour. Long-term parking at these lots costs you $36 for a day. 

You can get long-term parking at levels 3-7 of Hibiscus Garage, levels 2-4 of Palm Garage, and levels 7-9 of Cypress Garage. Getting FLL Airport parking at these lots charge you $15 for a day. The hourly parking rate is $3 per hour.
