Why PHL Airport parking is cheaper than Uber

If you’ve ever wanted to catch a flight out of Philadelphia Airport, you might’ve had to choose between three options for travel. You could either go for public transport, ride-sharing, or driving your own car. Public transport is not an attractive option for people with luggage. That leaves you to choose between driving your own car to get PHL Airport parking, or taking a ride-sharing app.

You can have this dilemma even if you’ve been living in Philadelphia all your life. If you live close to the airport, it makes sense to take an Uber. However, if you live in one of the suburbs of Philadelphia, the fare could become quite expensive. In such a situation, driving yourself to the airport seems the best way forward. After all, PHL Airport is 11 miles from downtown Philadelphia.

Let’s compare the transportation options, fares, and relative convenience to give you a better idea.

Public transport

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) provides connectivity between downtown Pennsylvania and PHL Airport. Trains run every 30 minutes, and the fare is pretty reasonably priced between $7-10. However, if you’re hauling a lot of luggage, this can be frustrating and inconvenient. It’s not something you want to experience when traveling, because so many other things might be going through your head.

Taxis, Uber or Lyft

Hailing a taxi or rideshare is pretty convenient – but only if you live close to the airport. We’re talking about a radius of 4-5 miles. Anywhere further, and the fare will spiral higher. For example, ride-sharing from downtown Philadelphia to PHL Airport will cost you anything between $25-55. Taxi cabs will cost you at least $35. Remember that these are on-way rates, and we haven’t even factored in surge pricing! Simply put, you could end up spending up to $100 just on transportation to and from PHL Airport!

In addition to this, Uber and Lyft aren’t the most time-saving options. Booking a cab and waiting for the driver to pick you up can be a hassle.

Driving and using PHL Airport parking

It makes sense to drive yourself to the airport. You have the convenience of leaving when you want and don’t have to shell out the huge cab fares. Once you’re at the airport, you can find secure parking at the PHL Airport parking lots.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to PHL Airport parking. There are two types of parking you can go for – on-site parking at PHL Airport or off-site parking at several airport hotels nearby. While on-site parking would be your default option, sometimes it can be hard to find a convenient spot. This is true during high-demand seasons like the holidays.

On the other hand, off-site PHL Airport parking is far more affordable, contactless, and more secure than the official lots. While on-site parking might cost you $16/day at the very least, you can get off-site parking for as little as $4/day! That’s including a free round-trip shuttle to and from the airport and extra services like car washes, oil changes, and detailing. You can use Way.com to easily book a contactless PHL Airport parking spot.

If you’re taking a long-term trip away from Philadelphia, it makes more sense to drive to the airport and park at one of the offsite PHL Airport parking lots.

How early should I leave for Philadelphia Airport?

Philadelphia airport is around 11 miles from downtown Philadelphia. Driving at average speed, the journey will take you 30 minutes to cover. However, you should foresee traffic diversions and delays on the way. Start a good one hour before you’re supposed to be at the airport.
