Who’s actually paying attention on the road? Red states or blue? Glowing\u00a0<\/span>phone\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0on the driver\u2019s seat\u00a0<\/span>is a common sight these days. No, it is not supposed to be<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Replies to texts and the videos that went viral can absolutely wait. <\/span><\/em>Distracted driving statistics show that it has grown into a national safety concern.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0looked at\u00a0<\/span>the national data on distracted driving\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>analyzed how they stack up.\u00a0<\/span>Which are the states that are focused while driving, and which are the ones that\u00a0<\/span>scroll past each drive, increasing\u00a0<\/span>the road fatalities in the country? The\u00a0<\/span>findings\u00a0<\/span><\/em>say how we drive and how often we lose focus while driving<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Much Do We Know About the Growing Problem of Distracted Driving?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0National\u00a0Highway\u00a0Traffic\u00a0Safety\u00a0Administration (NHTSA)<\/span>[<\/span>1<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0<\/sup>has defined\u00a0distracted\u00a0driving\u00a0as\u00a0involving\u00a0any\u00a0action\u00a0that\u00a0takes a\u00a0motorist\u2019s\u00a0eyes and mind off the\u00a0road.\u00a0These\u00a0actions\u00a0include\u00a0eating, drinking,\u00a0talking,\u00a0and\u00a0texting\u00a0on handheld devices.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023,\u00a0<\/span>NHTSA<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[2<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0recorded 3,275 deaths\u00a0and approximately 324,819 injuries from distraction-involved crashes.\u00a0Similarly, the observed handheld talking remained at 2.1% of drivers while\u00a0driving, which translates to 326,000 according to GHSA.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Distracted driving is\u00a0not\u00a0a passing\u00a0trend;\u00a0it is an ongoing problem,\u00a0and\u00a0the percentage of deaths due to distracted driving\u00a0crashes has\u00a0remained\u00a0the same\u00a0since\u00a02018.\u00a0<\/span>Distracted driving\u00a0accounts for 8%\u00a0of\u00a0all traffic fatalities<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[<\/span>3<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0even\u00a0in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Red vs. Blue: What Do the Distraction Patterns Look Like?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

While states are often categorized along political lines, the patterns of distracted driving do not align with this classification. The Way team analyzed telematics insights and found that distracted driving behaviors do not conform to these political divisions. <\/span><\/p>\n

While both red and blue states appear on the list of most distracted drivers, the majority of the first ten are primarily red. However, Rhode Island, a democratic-leaning state, is the most distracted state of the ten.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, we note that factors beyond politics affect driving habits, including the infrastructure, local laws, and drivers’ tech dependency. So, safer roads result from attention, not affiliation.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of political affiliation, here are a couple of reasons why some states may not be as great as others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Effective legislation<\/h3>\n

The Colorado\u00a0hands-free law\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0results\u00a0are\u00a0a great example\u00a0of\u00a0how\u00a0well\u00a0laws can\u00a0reduce\u00a0fatalities in\u00a0driving.\u00a0A state without\u00a0a\u00a0complete\u00a0ban\u00a0on phone\u00a0usage\u00a0while driving\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0higher\u00a0number\u00a0of incidents related\u00a0to distracted\u00a0driving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0GHSA\u00a0<\/span>[<\/span>5<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup>,\u00a031 states now prohibit handheld use,\u00a0and\u00a049 states prohibit texting.\u00a0The\u00a0reduction\u00a0in distracted\u00a0driving\u00a0post-law\u00a0is\u00a0documented\u00a0in\u00a0Ohio, Alabama, Michigan, and Missouri.\u00a0In Colorado,\u00a0one month after\u00a0its\u00a0hands-free law,\u00a0CMT\u00a0<\/span>[<\/span>6<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0observed\u00a0a 3.3%\u00a0drop\u00a0in\u00a0phone-motion distraction\u00a0and\u00a0estimated\u00a088 crashes\u00a0prevented.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0Montana,\u00a0there\u00a0is no ban\u00a0on\u00a0texting\u00a0while driving\u00a0or the use of\u00a0handheld\u00a0devices while\u00a0driving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Use of technology<\/h3>\n

\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>states that\u00a0adapt\u00a0to\u00a0technology and\u00a0devices\u00a0tend\u00a0to be involved in more\u00a0crashes.\u00a0For instance,\u00a0<\/span>CMT telemetry<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[<\/span>7<\/span><\/a>] <\/span><\/sup>shows\u00a0distraction differences align with\u00a0hands-free policy and the rural-urban mix.\u00a0<\/span>Approximately 9.5% higher in states without hands-free laws and\u00a0around 11% higher in rural states.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Practice\u00a0of law and\u00a0public awareness<\/h3>\n

In addition to effective implementation,\u00a0public awareness\u00a0is important in\u00a0ensuring\u00a0fewer\u00a0crashes due to distracted driving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do the Existing Driving Laws Shape Driving Habits?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since distracted\u00a0driving is\u00a0a\u00a0prevalent cause of\u00a0road accidents, many states\u00a0have passed laws that\u00a0are\u00a0supposed to curb distracted driving.\u00a0The\u00a0increase in fatalities due to\u00a0distracted\u00a0driving\u00a0rose to 3,275 in 2023,\u00a0according to\u00a0NHTSA.\u00a0Some states have\u00a0enacted laws\u00a0that\u00a0prohibit\u00a0holding, scrolling,\u00a0or\u00a0texting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)\u00a0has recently recommended\u00a0complete\u00a0bans on\u00a0all\u00a0drivers’ use of handheld cellphones.\u00a0However, no\u00a0state\u00a0has\u00a0completely banned cellphone\u00a0usage by drivers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hands-free law\u00a0implemented in 2025\u00a0in Colorado\u00a0led to\u00a0a\u00a0significant\u00a0drop (around 7%)\u00a0in phone-driven distractions and prevented dozens\u00a0of crashes and injuries within the first\u00a0six\u00a0months.\u00a0This\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0a clear link between law, compliance, and improved\u00a0safety.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on evidence and\u00a0according\u00a0to\u00a0experts,\u00a0we can\u00a0say that driving laws\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0penalize;\u00a0they redefine driving behaviors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
