They typically offer the convenience of never running out of the product with the benefit of discounted pricing versus the single purchase price.<\/p>\n<p>The subscription economy has begun to take hold in the carwash industry, too. Most carwash owners understand that the shift from customers paying-per-use to buying all-in monthly plans provides a predictable income stream and a loyal customer base.<\/p>\n<p>But the carwash industry is missing a key aspect of its subscription programs that the most successful plans have incorporated. Successful programs offer more than just convenience and discounts. The most successful models also provide added value, so there are more benefits than just cost savings.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subscriptions vs. memberships<\/h2>\n<p>When we think of things we subscribe to, we tend to think of magazines or the newspaper. We would receive our news and weekly reading material on a periodic basis. No one thought of a weekly magazine as a membership to anything.<\/p>\n<p>But today\u2019s modern subscriptions offer additional value. If you\u2019re a member of DoorDash, you not only get waived delivery fees but also free priority delivery times and access to member-only deals that make customers feel like VIPs.<\/p>\n<p>With Amazon Prime, customers get free shipping in addition to a bundle of entertainment services, including video, music and gaming \u2014 as well as access to an entire Black Friday-style sale event called Prime Day that\u2019s only available to members. Each of these memberships has a deeply loyal following \u2014 something that carwash memberships are lacking today.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solving the retention problem<\/h2>\n<p>The carwash industry suffers from subscription churn and seasonality. In non-snow states, demand for clean vehicles is lower in the winter. Incentivizing usage during low-demand periods isn\u2019t practical. What\u2019s needed is to provide additional value to subscriptions that turn them into membership programs with value beyond unlimited monthly carwashes.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that\u2019s understood about carwash monthly customers is that they all care for their vehicles, so additional member benefits should address the needs of a vehicle owner. Benefits that appeal to car owners come in four categories:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vehicle-related discount benefits: <\/strong>If car washes are seasonal, it\u2019s likely that services related to vehicle usage are not. In fact, the demand for covered parking during the rainy season is likely higher when wash demands are low. Vehicle maintenance is typically driven by mileage milestones that are also not seasonal. And there\u2019s always a need for gas or electric vehicle (EV) charging. Offering discounts on parking, maintenance, and gas or charging provides a benefit nearly every time a car is used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highly perceived value benefits:\u00a0<\/strong>Bundling the benefit that customers are currently paying for as part of the carwash subscription immediately adds value. In the same way that the American Express card includes a free membership to Paramount+ or a free membership to a priority lounge club, carwash memberships can include an auto club-style set of benefits. Free roadside assistance, free towing and access to a mechanic hotline essentially offers the same peace of mind as an auto club membership akin to breakdown insurance for which many customers are paying $100 per year or more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-based benefits:\u00a0<\/strong>One of the key aspects of a member program is rewards that are earned with loyalty. Having time-based rewards provides an incentive to keep the membership for an extra month or two. Earning a free oil change after a year\u2019s membership or a free express detailing after six months offers a reason to keep the membership active for an extra few months. These can also assist with retention during the member cancellation flow. \u201cAre you sure you want to cancel? You\u2019re just one month away from an express detail!\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>VIP benefits:\u00a0<\/strong>One value of a membership is the emotional experience of feeling special, whether because they can \u201ccut the line\u201d or by being treated like a regular and greeted by name with automated vehicle recognition and real-time member detail updates to the attendant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the industry is heading<\/h2>\n<p>The carwash industry has already moved to subscriptions. Packages that offer unlimited washes for less than the price of two washes are now the industry norm. But industry churn is still far below the successful annual churn of 20% to 30%. The few carwashes that have embraced memberships have seen their churn drop from 70% annually to 30%, all with the addition of extra benefits. The secrets to retention are already known, and it\u2019s just up to the carwash industry to successfully move to the next phase of evolution to turn their customers from one-time washers to satisfied members.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a membership includes multiple benefits, the cancellation decision changes. It is no longer about wash frequency.
