Question

Does car insurance cover theft?

If your car insurance includes comprehensive coverage, then your car is covered in case of theft.

Your car is protected in the event of theft only if you have comprehensive coverage. In other words, comprehensive coverage will cover a stolen car, vandalism, a stolen catalytic converter, a stolen key or key fob, or damage to the vehicle during the theft.

So, with comprehensive coverage, when your car is stolen, the insurer will pay for the current value or actual cash value of your stolen car. But the personal items stolen along with the car will not be covered unless they are covered separately under a property insurance policy.

Therefore, if you just have liability or collision coverage alone as per the state requirement, your car won’t be protected against theft; only having comprehensive coverage will cover a stolen car.
