Is my car's AC shutting off because of high engine temperature?

The car’s AC could shut off due to low coolant levels, a clogged radiator, a faulty radiator fan, a damaged thermostat, and a blown head gasket.

1. Low Coolant Levels: 

Coolants regulate the engine temperature and prevent it from overheating. Low coolant levels will affect the radiator and cause the engine to seize. As a measure to prevent engine overheating, the AC shuts off. 

2. Clogged Radiator: 

A radiator plays an important role in regulating the temperature of the engine. A clogged radiator would mean that it cannot perform the function of transferring heat from the engine to the surrounding air. It could contribute to the AC shutting off.

3. Faulty Radiator Fan: 

The radiator fan pushes the heat released by the radiator into the surrounding air. A faulty radiator fan will result in the temperature rising in the cooling system and engine overheating. This triggers the AC to turn off due to high temperature.    

4. Damaged Thermostat: 

The thermostat regulates the coolant flow while it circulates through the radiator and then through different parts of the engine. A damaged thermostat will cause heating issues due to dysregulated coolant flow, subsequently causing the AC to shut off as a safety measure. 

5. Blown Head Gasket: 

A head gasket seals the engine block and the cylinder head to prevent mixing coolant, combustion gases, and engine oil. A blown gasket causes coolant and oil leaks, resulting in a dip in engine coolant levels, which can cause the AC to shut down.

What should I do if my AC shuts off due to high engine temperature? 

The AC system will shut off automatically during high engine temperatures to ease the engine’s workload. So, you should examine the temperature gauge on the dashboard and fix the engine cooling system if needed. 

Is it safe to drive a car with the AC turned off due to high engine temperature? 

No, it is not recommended to continue driving the car with the AC turned off, as it results in engine failure. An overheated engine can be dangerous and expensive to repair.  

How can I prevent my AC from shutting off due to high engine temperature? 

Ensure that your car’s cooling system, including the radiator, thermostat, fan, and gasket, is in good working order to avoid the air conditioning shutting down due to high engine temperature. Have your coolant refilled if necessary. 

How are the car’s AC and engine related? 

The engine’s crankshaft drives the AC compressor using a serpentine belt. When the AC is switched on, it draws power from the engine and adds strain, causing it to work harder to generate extra power. To avoid putting excessive pressure on the engine, the ECU will disengage the AC compressor, causing the AC to stop blowing cold air.  

Does engine temperature affect the AC? 

Yes. When the engine gets too hot, it cuts off the power to the AC. It is a mechanism to save the car from severe damage.
