Question

How can you check if the DMV received your smog certificate?

You can check if the DMV received your smog certificate in four ways: online, by phone, by mail, or in person.

After your vehicle passes a smog check, the results are automatically sent to the DMV. You can confirm that they received your certificate using any of these methods.

Online verification

Checking online is the easiest way. Most states have DMV websites where you can quickly see your smog certificate status.

Step 1: Visit the official DMV website for your state or where your vehicle is registered.

Step 2: Log in to your “My DMV” account. If you do not have one, sign up with your email and password.

Step 3: Follow the website instructions to find the certificate verification page.

Step 4: Enter your vehicle details and the smog certificate number from your test results.

Step 5: If the DMV has received your certificate, the website will usually show a PDF copy you can download.

Phone inquiry

You can call the DMV using the phone numbers on their website and speak with an agent.

Step 1: Call the right number. You will have to go through a series of automated “press” prompts to reach the correct agent. If you miss your option, do not panic, as these systems are designed to repeat.

Step 2: When you reach an agent, you will need to give your name, address, and vehicle details to confirm your identity before receiving information.

Mail-in request

This is the slowest method. The DMV gets a lot of mail, so it may take longer to get a response.

Step 1: Find the mailing address of the DMV in the “Contact Us” section of their website.

Step 2: Write a formal request that includes your full name, address, vehicle registration details, and the test certificate number.

In-person visit

You can visit your DMV office during regular business hours to check if your smog certificate has been received.

Step 1: Check the DMV website to see if you need an appointment. If you do, schedule a date and time.

Step 2: Bring your vehicle registration, your name and address, and the smog certificate number. Give these to the agent to check if your certificate is in their system.
